Cadets Corps' commanding officer retires
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Cadet Corps 2967
has undergone a change in its
commanding officer this past week.
Captain Louise Wegg has assumed
the role from Captain John Grobbo,
who has held the position since
1991.
Captain Grobbo has been involved
in the Cadet program for 27 years.
He began his military career as a
civilian instructor with - the Royal
Regiment of Canada in Toronto at
Fort York Armouries. He was
commissioned as a second lieutenant
after two years and stayed with the
regiment for five years. His career as
cadet instructor took him to the
Wellington Rifle Corps in Guelph,
the Palmerston Cadet Corps, then
Brussels Cadet Corps.
"He is probably the most passion
commanding officer of a Cadet Corp
with the fairness of a caring father
towards all of his cadets and
officers," said Col. Jim Abbott,
Army League Representative of
Ontario.
Col. Abbott presented Captain
Grobbo with a certificate of
appreciation from the Cadet League
of Canada for his years of service.
Captain Grobbo has resided in the
Gorrie area for many years and will
still be involved in the Brussels
Corps in a support capacity.
Captain Wegg is from the
Teeswater area. She has been
involved in the Cadet program for
many years and has been a cadet
instructor cadre since 1998.
She began her career in army
cadets and served many years in the
Air Cadet Corps in Wingham.
She turned her interest back to
army cadets and joined the officer
team in Brussels a year ago.
Captain Wegg is the mother of five
grown girls and brings with her a
wealth of experience.
Tuesday evening at the Legion
was also cadet inspection. It began
with the procession of officers,
included Captain Grobbo and Lt.
Patti Wegg and the 28 Cadet Corps
members, Captain Wegg entered
along with Major Kim Coddle and
Detachment Commander Maj.
Trutte.
The officers conducted an
inspection of troops, followed by a
march past led by Captain Grobbo.
The signing of detachment papers
transferring command to Captain
Wegg from Captain Grobbo was
overseen by Maj. Coddle.
Captain Grobbo made his remarks
including how proud he was of all
his cadets and what a great team of
officers are in place. He praised the
many volunteers and how valuable
they are to a Corps. He thanked the
Corps for all the hard work in
training this past month, the Legion
for its support and the parent support
committee.
He also thanked his wife Anne, for
her many years of support in
attending military functions, dinners
and staying home alone while John
attended weekend camps and
training sessions.
Maj. Coddle expressed her words
of gratitude to Captain Grobbo and
had words of encouragement for
incoming C.O. Captain Wegg.
Maj. Trutte also brought words of
thanks from the detachment for
Capt. Grobbo and wished Capt.
Wegg good luck in her new role.
Legion President Comrade Jo-Ann
McDonald thanked Capt. Grobbo for
his many years of service and
