Cadets Corps' commanding officer retires By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Cadet Corps 2967 has undergone a change in its commanding officer this past week. Captain Louise Wegg has assumed the role from Captain John Grobbo, who has held the position since 1991. Captain Grobbo has been involved in the Cadet program for 27 years. He began his military career as a civilian instructor with - the Royal Regiment of Canada in Toronto at Fort York Armouries. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant after two years and stayed with the regiment for five years. His career as cadet instructor took him to the Wellington Rifle Corps in Guelph, the Palmerston Cadet Corps, then Brussels Cadet Corps. "He is probably the most passion commanding officer of a Cadet Corp with the fairness of a caring father towards all of his cadets and officers," said Col. Jim Abbott, Army League Representative of Ontario. Col. Abbott presented Captain Grobbo with a certificate of appreciation from the Cadet League of Canada for his years of service. Captain Grobbo has resided in the Gorrie area for many years and will still be involved in the Brussels Corps in a support capacity. Captain Wegg is from the Teeswater area. She has been involved in the Cadet program for many years and has been a cadet instructor cadre since 1998. She began her career in army cadets and served many years in the Air Cadet Corps in Wingham. She turned her interest back to army cadets and joined the officer team in Brussels a year ago. Captain Wegg is the mother of five grown girls and brings with her a wealth of experience. Tuesday evening at the Legion was also cadet inspection. It began with the procession of officers, included Captain Grobbo and Lt. Patti Wegg and the 28 Cadet Corps members, Captain Wegg entered along with Major Kim Coddle and Detachment Commander Maj. Trutte. The officers conducted an inspection of troops, followed by a march past led by Captain Grobbo. The signing of detachment papers transferring command to Captain Wegg from Captain Grobbo was overseen by Maj. Coddle. Captain Grobbo made his remarks including how proud he was of all his cadets and what a great team of officers are in place. He praised the many volunteers and how valuable they are to a Corps. He thanked the Corps for all the hard work in training this past month, the Legion for its support and the parent support committee. He also thanked his wife Anne, for her many years of support in attending military functions, dinners and staying home alone while John attended weekend camps and training sessions. Maj. Coddle expressed her words of gratitude to Captain Grobbo and had words of encouragement for incoming C.O. Captain Wegg. Maj. Trutte also brought words of thanks from the detachment for Capt. Grobbo and wished Capt. Wegg good luck in her new role. Legion President Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald thanked Capt. Grobbo for his many years of service and wished the new C.O. Capt.Wegg good luck. Captain Wegg drew the winners for the committee raffle following the ceremonies. Winning the beautiful fall quilt was Sharon Stephenson. The apron and cookbook went to Meaghan Wegg and the tote bag to Jacob Hiebert. Moving on Retiring commander Capt.
