(NC)—While there's no such thing
as a "miracle food," there are
certain foods that everyone should
try to eat more of — fruit,
vegetables, legumes, and whole
grains. Terrific for heart health,
they provide nutrients such as
vitamins, beta carotene, lycopene,
plant sterols, folic acid, and fibre.
1. Broccoli. For vitamin C, beta
carotene, folic acid.
2. Cantaloupe. For vitamins A
and C and beta carotene.
3. Beans or legumes. For protein,
iron, plant sterols, folic acid, and
fibre.
4. Sweet Potatoes. For vitamins
A and C, beta carotene,
potassium, and fibre.
5. Salmon, tuna, rainbow trout.
For omega-3 fatty acids.
6. Spinach, kale, swiss chard.
For vitamins A and C, beta
carotene, calcium, folic acid, and
fibre.
7. Oranges. For vitamin C, folic
acid, and fibre.
8. Tomatoes. For lycopene.
9. Wholegrain breads and cereals.
For vitamin B and fibre.
10. Soybeans and soy products.

Laker Midgets extend winning streak
The Huron Perth Lakers AAA
Major Midget hockey team extended
its winning streak to four games
with a 5 - 3 win over the Elgin
Middlesex Chiefs in Strathroy,
Sunday afternoon.
The team's powerplay was very
effective, as the Lakers scored all
five goals with a man advantage.
They came out strong in the firstof
three 20 minute periods, finding
themselves with many powerplay
opportunities. Tyler Masson opened
the scoring four minutes into the
game.
Brook Wheeler of Brussels
stopped 28 shots in a contest
between her Colgate University
hockey teammates and the Niagara
N.Y. Purple Eagles squad, Oct.
6.
Her efforts weren't quite enough,
however, as Colgate fell 3-1 in this
season opener.
The Friday night euchre party at
the Cranbrook Hall was hosted by
Adrian and Shirley Verstoep and
Marion Harrison. There were 8 1/2
tables at play.
Winners were: travelling lone
hand, Marg Peebles; share-the-
wealth, Bill Craig and Lloyd Weber;
Assisting on the goal was J.J.
Sparling and Kurtis Bartliff. Matt
Chaput scored the final goal of the
period, with assists going to Tyler
Van Drunen and Jacob Brown.
The Midgets were able to gain a
four-goal lead in the second period
with goals by Bartliff and
VanDrunen.
Getting assists were Scott Miller,
Chris Holmes, Lorenz
Guntzenperger and Chaput.
Elgin Middlesex finally got on the
scoreboard with a powerplay goal of
their own in the dying minutes of the
Colgate took a 1-0 lead with a
powerplay goal in the first.
But seconds into the
middle frame, Naigara evened
with score on a man-advantage
goal. After Niagara won the face-
off in their zone the puck
was backhanded between Wheeler's
legs.

Midway through the third the
Lakers regained the four goal
advantage, going up 5-1 when
Brown and Jared Carr set up Colin
Thompson for another powerplay
marker.
Two minutes later, the Chiefs
answered back with two goals less
then• 15 seconds apart, but the Lakers •
were able to hold on for a 5-3
victory.
Evan Groenestege had a solid
game in net, picking up his second
win of the season.
Niagara gained the lead late in the
second when the puck deflected off a
Colgate defender into the net. Then a
powerplay goal in the third provided
some insurance.
The two teams faced-off the next
day and tied. Wheeler stopped 20
shots on net in this effort.
Leading by one in the third,
Bremner, Eileen Mann, Leona
McDonald, Marguerite Beirnes,
Joan Jacobs, Lloyd Weber, Dorothy
Dilworth, Florence Holmes, Mary
Huether, Judy Hahn and Sharon
Freeman.
The next euchre at the hall will be
on Friday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.
The Major Midgets appeared to be
adjusting to the longer games, as this
was their first game with three 20-
minute periods.
They continue to hold on to third
place in the league with four wins
and one loss, trailing the Waterloo
Wolves and the London Jr.
Knights.
Beginning Saturday, Oct. 14, the
Major Midgets play three games in
three days, finishing with a game
against the first-place Wolves in
Waterloo on Monday. They are at
home against the last place Chatham
Colgate looked as if they might eke
out the victory.
However late in the periOd, a
Niagara freshman snuck one by
Wheeler to tie the game.
Neither team could capitalize in
the overtime period that followed
with Niagara having two shots to
Colgate's one.
