THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2006. Use Your Voice to protect children from abuse It's your voice. It's our communi- ty. They are our children and future. Together, the Huron County Child Abuse Prevention Committee (HCCAPC) and the Huron Perth_ Children's Aid Society are reaching out to communities and workplaces to promote the Purple Ribbon Campaign this month. This year's campaign, Use Your Voice, is breaking down barriers that prevent individuals from coming for- ward to report child abuse and neg- lect. New this year, HCCAPC is reach- ing out to major employers across Huron County to give presentations and share posters about the impor-- tance of father involvement in chil- dren's lives. "By challenging fathers to use their voices to identify, respond and report child abuse and neglect, we also hope to challenge fathers to use their voices for laughter, discovery, acceptance and nurturing. We invite employers to participate in our inno- vative child abuse prevention educa- tion campaign that focuses on the importance of father involvement in their families," says Alexandra Beasse, manager of the Family and Child Abuse Prevention Education Program (HCCAPC). Use the important ideas shared in the 'Purple Ribbon Campaign' throughout the year: As an individual take the lead. Talk to your family, friends and your co-workers about child abuse and neglect and how important it is to protect children who may be silent, powerless victims of abuse. Your conversation may raise their awareness and could protect a child. As a family member, celebrate the achievements of children, support their abilities and talents. Discover the laughter, stories and adventures that are part of all family life. Fathers and mothers have important roles to support healthy child devel- opment. As a community member, speak out against attitudes and language that do not respect children's rights. Set a positive example for others. Use language that recognizes and celebrates the potential and promise By Paul Mistele, Vice-President, Ontario Federation of Agriculture There's an abundance of evidence showing what farmers and agricul- ture contribute to the people of Ontario and the economy of the province. Each year, at this time Ontario Agriculture Week is a provincial designation aimed at cel- ebrating this contribution and the work of farm families. Bert Johnson, a former Member of the provincial legislature represent- ing the Perth-Middlesex riding, felt more should be done to recognize the contribution of agriculture to the As. a citizen, mobilize your com- munity to reduce poverty, illiteracy, poor health and isolation that may contribute to an environment that fosters child neglect, exploitation and abuse. We all have a role to play to protect our children's rights. Economic security is a basic human right. Parents often have dif- ferent roles in their families. Did you know. that many fathers build their involvement with their children through providing for their families? Involved fathers are more likely to strive for career success and contribute in their workplace. Employees who are involVed fathers often enjoy better health, less work-related stress and fewer acci- dental deaths.
