Brussels and Ethel United Churches We are now into the beautiful season of autumn. Can you tell me where did summer go? For many of us, the busyness of summer has extended into the fall. Moving into one season from the other always brings change and my favourite is this time of the year. One of the reasons I enjoy this time of the year is that I change from one cooking appliance to another. Out comes the roasting pan for the oven and because the house is cooler now, I will not feel guilty heating up the kitchen when the oven is on. Don't get me wrong, the other most frequent venue of cooking, the barbeqUe, is not far away, but there is nothing like the smell of a roast in the oven, wafting- throughout the downstairs when the weather turns cooler. With fall, comes the shorter days, the unsettling weather and the local fairs. I love the fair. This year was my first time at Brussels fair and I marvelled at the community involvement. The children marching in the parade brought back memories of times over 50 years ago that my school marched in our parade. We practised at recesses for two weeks, under the watchful eye of drill sergeant Miss O'Brien who shouted "left, right, left, right...". Louder vocal emphasis was on "left" and by the time we were finished, each of her Grade 1 students knew the difference between their left side and the right side! The exhibits at Brussels fair were outstanding. As a spectator only and not a participant this year, I appreciated the talents of young and old alike. Many hours and much energy is extended into these projects and I know the fair board is grateful for your contributions. The baking display was the exhibit that piqued my interest the most. To be a winner in multiple categories takes much planning and organizing. Years ago, I entered the bake contest at my local fair. The entries had to arrive by Friday noon for judging. On Monday evening of that week I selected the recipes. Tuesday evening, I shopped for groceries. Wednesday evening, I baked the goods that would still be fresh on Friday such as loaves, cookies and muffins. Thursday, I rearranged my work schedule for time off and baked all day. Friday morning, I labeled everything and transported exhibits to the fair. I don't recall the number of the exhibits but it was enough to win the title of Bake Queen. With change and the busyness of life, sometimes it is difficult to take time to find and see God in the ordinary passing of the day. I have made it a practice to find and see God even when the busyness takes over my life. Since coming to Brussels in February, I haven't taken time to do much baking, something I used to be okay at. Of course I could say that I don't need the extra calories; and sharing the treats with others is an option. But the truth is, my last endeavours have not been too successful and they are not worth sharing. J want to blame the bad results on an oven that I am not accustomed to but the truth is, I have lost my touch. Last week, j decided to bake zucchini and banana loaves. A couple of meetings were scheduled at the manse and I wished to be a gracious hostess. I used a trusted recipe for the zucchini' loaf and a new recipe for the banana loaf. Remember when I talked about busy lives? One should never be too busy to thoroughly read the recipe to make sure all ingredients and instructions were listed. I gathered all the ingredients for the banana loaf and added, in order as directed. Everything was okay until I looked for what pan and how many pans to use. After dividing the mixture into two pans, I realized only one pan was needed. More dishes to wash! I had set the oven dial to 325°F as directed but the recipe did not state the length of time for baking. Checking other recipes on the pages, I planned for 45 to 60 minutes. Oh, I looked forward to this luscious loaf with a bit of butter lathered on the slice. The enticing smell of the loaf permeated the kitchen. Forty-five minutes seemed not enough time. Fifty-five minutes seemed just right. I thought, yes, a few extra minutes when we take time with God is better too. I reached inside the oven 'and tapped the top of the loaf. Sure enough, it was hard and no soft spots. I removed the pan from the oven and to prevent the loaf from cooking more, I turned it upside down, hoping the loaf would slide right out of the pan. Well it did: in one mushy mess. The inside was not cooked but the outside was. I put the loaf back in the oven and pondered if it was worth saving. God tells us not to measure the inside of a person by how they appear on the outside and vice versa. With a bit more time in the oven, and even though there was a hole in the middle of the loaf, that hole did not take away from the taste and usefulness of the loaf With God's love, kindness, care and attention, we can be redeemed as well. Lesson learned is to not be in a hurry, take time for God. He has patience for us. We have a purpose even though our gifts may not be as obvious or plentiful as others. We are not perfect and God loves us anyway. I am going back in the kitchen now to practise on a lemon loaf. I wonder how I will see God there?
