PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2006. Florists raise funds for breast cancer clinic By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a number of local florists have banded together to remind women to 'take care' of themselves. For the third year the Take Care campaign will raise money for the Huron County breast screening clinic in Goderich. Luann Taylor of Luann's Country Flowers and Gifts in Blyth and Goderich came up with the idea after being diagnosed with, and treated for, breast cancer. For each bouquet of a dozen carnations Letter THE EDITOR, For many of us who have endured the terrible loss of a close loved one, emotionally, it seems that a medical diagnosis of cancer is an almost certain death sentence. Without question, the mere mention of the word conjures up a terrible fear that strikes to our very core. Of course, with new and innovative medical advancements, cancer is anything but a death sentence however, nothing reminds us more of our mortality than that single, dreaded term. Recently, I met a man named Steve Darley, from Aylmer, Ontario. Steve, who is a husband, a father of three, a firefighter and a licensed carpenter, is also a 44-year- old survivor of oesophageal cancer. On Jan. 13, 2005, Steve was diagnosed with cancer of the oseophagus and on Feb. 15, 2005 an intru- sive oesophagectomy was preformed. Unfortunately, Steve's surgery was not without complications and he was forced to spend 23 days in THE EDITOR, 2007 will mark 50 years since the original Seaforth and District High School Girls Trumpet Band began under the direction of Mr. George Hildebrand. Countless area elementary and high school girls have been members of the band in those 50 years. Charles Kalbfleisch has continued to direct since 1978. Wouldn't it be fun to get together for an afternoon of reminiscing about those years of performances, travel and sisterhood? Continued from page 1 Tuckersmith, new face Les Falconer will join incumbent Larry McGrath. In McKillop, the race is among three newcomers, with baby's breath and greenery, she donated $5 to the clinic. That first year brought in $500. The following year, she was joined by three other florists and raised $1,500. For the 2006 campaign, which will run from Oct. 16- 31, there are nine locations involved. They are: Village Vines, Exeter, 519-235-0009; Blooms n' Rooms, Seaforth, 519-527-0555; Flower Magic, Seaforth, 519-527-1110; Per- Feet Designs, Clinton, 519- 482-8222; Cooke's Florist, Clinton, 519-482-7012; Flowers on Main, Wingham, 519-357-4876; Everlastings, Lucknow, 519-528-3312 and intensive care recovering. Despite the seriousness of his ordeal, just three months following his surgery, with a feeding tube in place, Steve returned to work. Even more remarkably, on Aug. 21, 2006, Steve began cycling more than 3,000 kms. from Thunder Bay, along the Great Lakes shoreline to Ottawa. While his primary goal was to show that cancer does not have to be a death sentence, he also wanted to raise money and awareness to help cancer patients beat the odds. As a number of my colleagues from the National Liberal Caucus, and myself, welcomed Steve to Parliament Hill, I was filled with a great sense of pride. Steve, his wife Tracey, his three children and all of those who helped him to successfully execute this labour of hope, deserve our thanks and I was pleased to have had the opportunity to recognize his immense accomplishment. Paul Steckle, MP, Huron Bruce. A meeting to discuss the possibility of a 50-year reunion will be held in the French room of Seaforth Public School (the old high school) on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
