`Heartstrings' all about the music
has won championships and
performed on television and radio. It
may not be something you'd want to
listen to on a regular basis, but it
certainly gets your attention the first
time you hear him.
Ginger Cat Productions is a new
Toronto-based company. Its
production of Heartstrings is in the
test stages, and as such, has some
things to work on. However, if you
like music, it's an enjoyably
different way of presenting it.
There are performances this
weekend in Blyth. Call the Festival
for more information.

There's no question that Ginger
Cat Productions' Heartstrings, is all
about the music.
Playing at Memorial Hall until
Oct. 2, the show is less about a story
than it is about a reason to link
together the musical talent on stage.
From the fantastic fiddling of the
incomparable Frank Leahy to the
soaring soprano of Patricia
O'Callaghan, Heartstrings treats
theatregoers to a tuneful time.
The words that string the music
are delivered by Dan Redican, a
founding member of the comedy
troupe the Frantics. His role is that
of the verbose David Bochner.
The whole community of Angus
has gathered at the Kiwanis Hall to
see Bochner's slide show from his
recent trip. As the journey became
somewhat of a personal odyssey for
Bochner, who ,explored the history
of music through the violin during
his travels, he had engaged local
musicians to accompany his
reminiscences.
And this is where Heartstrings
becomes less of a musical play and

more of a narrative concert. While
there's no doubt that Bochner has a
story to tell (the highlights of the trip
are intersperced with the lows of his
marriage) and some occasionally
heartfelt messages to share, the
words string the music together.
Redican is a brilliant comedian
with impeccable timing. Whether
it's a corny joke or inane chatter he
delivers the line with just the right
touch. He is equally adept at creating
a recognizable character, colouring
Bochner with shades of humility,
self-deprecation and pomposity.
Essentially the only cast member
with anything to say, Redican has an
incredible amount of dialogue and
handles the pressure well.
The music his words link was
performed by four people, led by the
incomparable Frank Leahy. The past
Canadian National Fiddle Champion
has a mastery of a variety of music.
When he makes that violin sing,
whether it's with baroque or country,
the audience is enthralled.
Equally dazzling is the piano
virtuosity of Mark Camilleri, who is
also Heartstrings musical director.
From arranging, to production to
performing, Camilleri dazzles.
Soaring soprano Patricia
O'Callaghan shows admirable
diversity, stirring pulses with an aria
or mixing it up with some Cajun
spice.
And finally there is Cal Fenwick.
If nothing else surprises you in this
production, he will. About the time
he was learning to talk, Fenwick
apparently discovered whistling. He
