WDH Auxiliary celebrates with centennial tea By Isobel Arbuckle To celebrate the achievements of the Auxiliary to Wingham and District Hospital over the last 100 years. the auxiliary hosted a centennial tea Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Terrace Room at the hospital. Mrs. C. M. Crawford was the first auxiliary president back in 1906. At the time, the auxiliary supplied furnishings such as curtains, bedding, gowns and nursery supplies. Groups of women also did all the hospital mending. In 1962, the Ontario Hospital Commission took complete charge of supplies and the auxiliary focus from this point on was to raise money to buy equipment not supplied by the commission. Rummage sales were held twice a year, along with marathon bridge games, the gift chest, annual teas and tag days were other fundraising ventures undertaken by the auxiliary. To serve the public, members continue to have many events during the year. The New Year's baby is given a gift and each baby born in December is sent home in a Christmas stocking. The auxiliary donates a $500 bursary at commencement each year at the F. E. Madill Secondary School. This bursary goes to a young person who is furthering their studies in the medical field. The trellis at the front of the hospital is decorated for the season and tray favours for the holidays are supplied. Used books are available to patients and the auxiliary attempts to have recent magazines available as reading material within the hospital. Auxiliary members also assist with cancer clinics, blood donor clinics and influenza vaccine clinics. Meals-on-Wheels are delivered by many volunteers of the auxiliary. At one time, the hospital windows were decorated for Christmas with prizes awarded. For 50 years, classes of the registered nursing assistants and later Majestic Women's Institute met on Sept. 13 for their first fall meeting in the Brussels library. An officers' workshop was held in Bloomingdale on Sept. 13. Leona Armstrong attended this event. The Huron County Rally is being held in Dashwood on Oct. 2 for interested members to attend. The Guelph Area convention is on Oct. 19 at St. Agatha.
