Sports Lakers perform well at Knights tourney The Huron Perth AAA Atom London this past weekend. Lakers competed in the 2006 Jr. On Friday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. the Knights early bird tournament in Lakers faced off against .Don Mills The Sunday morning Up Before the Roosters crew had their season ending wrap-up with 18 holes and a steak barbecue on Sept. 19. Competition was keen and at the end of the front nine there was a tie between Jason LeRoux and John Dailleboust for the top spot with scores of 37. However in the back nine Terry Powell shot a 38 to match his front nine to come in with a 76 for top low gross. Don Rae finished strong with a back nine of 37 and won the low net. Dennis Knox picked up three skins, John Dailleboust won one skin, Jim Ross picked up five skins and Jason LeRoux two skins. The big winner was Don Rae with no less than seven skins thanks to a birdie on number 13. *** On Wednesday a full field of 60 golfers took part in the John Malick Memorial Golf Tournament.. At the Sept. 18 meeting, Huron East council referred the request of Jacquie Waechter for two additional spaces to be added to the front of the arena to the board for consideration. *** Council approved payment of the accounts in the amount of $2.154,774.15. *** Council proclaimed Oct. 16 to 22, repeat winner of the John Malick trophy with the overall low gross for the day with a 78. In the A division for golfers 50 to 59 years old, first low gross with an 80 was Phil Jones with' the first low net with a 70 was Bill Kerr. In the B flight, 60 - 69 years, low gross v. ith an 80 was Fred Norman with Colley McDonagh's 63 capturing the low net. In the C flight, 70 plus, Wingham's Don Rae captured low gross with an 87 and Ken Saxton took low net with a 68. Closest to the pin awards went to three local golfers — Al Godfrey on number two, Roger Keay on number five and Ken Saxton on number seven. Winners of closest to the rope on the first hole was Listowel's Don Rae. *** Thursday Men's Night saw 30 out. Did they come to golf or to partake in the smoked pork chop 2006 as Waste Reduction Week within the Municipality of Huron East. *** Oct. 7, was proclaimed as World Hospice Day and Oct. 7 to 14, 2006 as Hospice Awareness Week. All citizens will be encouraged to recognize the meaningful contribution made by compassionate volunteers and professionals of the hospice palliatiye care movement. *** The Huron United Way and Community Matters Project will discuss issues that matter to area and won 3-I. Scoring for the locals were Kenny Huether, Kiernyn Campbell and dinner complete with home-cooked beans? Once again Terry Powell continued to be the best in the pack as he took first place with a round of 40 while Bill Dauphin took second prize with a 43. Skin winners were Ken Buchanan, three; Steve Coulter, four and Pete Inglis, two. Longest putt on number nine was won by Bill Robinson. *** With the shorter days and cooler nights many of the curlers are getting itchy brooms. I noticed several curlers out paying their memberships to take advantage of the early bird discount. Sunday, Sept. 24 saw a very successful curling club beef and pork barbecue with a big crowd our and many taking advantage of discounted golf green fees for the day to enjoy their once-a-year round of golf before the big meal. citizens on Monday, Oct, 2 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Wingham Midwestern Adult Day Centre. *** Council made a motion to refer the request from Brussels Minor Soccer to the rec board for consideration. The request is for the construction of a storage shed behind the Brussels Morris and Grey Recreation Centre for storage of soccer materials. A written agreement would be entered into by the organization and the municipality. Cullen Mercer. Assists went to Evan ;Chaffe and Haydn Favacho. The game MVP was Mercer. That afternoon the team came up against Richmond Hill. It was another strong game for the Lakers as they shutout their opponents 2-0. Mercer bulged the twine twice for his team, while Huether and Chaffe each tallied an assist. Ben Larder earned the shutout and was game MVP. Sunday at 7:30 a.m. it was the Lakers versus the Kitchener Rangers. This contest was not as successful as the Lakers came up short -3-1. Mercer scored the lone Lakers goal, while Mykal Hodges and Chaffe earned the assists. Nathan Smith was MVP. That afternoon the Lakers played an American team from West Seneca. The final score was 5-2 for the Lakers. Mercer lit the light twice, with Kiernyn Campbell, Lucas Spence and Wyatt Ducharme of Brussels each scoring one. Assists went to Huether, Mercer, Chaffe with two, Spence and Favacho. Campbell took MVP honours. The team's four games against tough competition netted them a tie with Kitchener for first place in the division. However with a head-to- head victory against the Lakers, the Rangers moved on to the semi-final match.
