After what is normally a long flight, I arrived in Israel after an even longer flight. The departure from Toronto was two hours late and from Budapest another hour late. We did make some time coming from Toronto though. In Budapest I used the layover time to take public transit to the city to see the Great Synagogue and the Jewish Museum, which is at the same place. The cost for the transit is 185 forints (fts.) for each of the two segments of the trip. The cost of 10,000 fts. is about $50 Canadian. It is impressive to have a 5,000 ft bill in your pocket but scary when a sub at subway is over 1,000 ft. On the way from the airport we went to Nahariyya, which is on the Mediterranean. There is a boardwalk there and many little shops and eating places on the streets close to the water. There was no sign of the recent rocket attacks here. Today was a mission that arose as a result of a conversation with some Brussels people prior to my trip.....I had heard that all the McDonalds restaurants had been forced to observe kashrut. This would mean that a Big Mac would either have no cheese or no beef on it. Also, they would not be able to serve any milk (shakes) if beef was the chosen option. Well, I'm pleased to report that none of this is true. I'm not sure that the cheese on my big Mac was real cheese but my son assured me that it was likely some sort of processed cheese. It resembled what I know as sandwich spread...that one that has mayo with tiny bits of pickles and other tasty things in it with sort of a cheesy colour. The Big Mac and the milkshake cost about $6. Alan said that on Passover they do bow to `kashrut' (kosher) and they serve burgers on matzos instead of buns for those who want to keep to unleavened bread. This is NOT kosher! Alan said that anyone who was at all concerned about keeping kosher wouldn't be eating there anyway. They'd go to Burger Ranch where there is no dairy product in the place. The shakes are made from vegetable oil productS. We went to Tsfat (Safed) Sept. 12 where there is a strong artists colony. It is all hills and considerably above sea level. Very touristy. I was hoping to find an ancient synagogue there where the historical `rebbes' studied and worshiped. Mission not successful. Loads of directions from people but it remains a mystery to us. After this we went to Rosh Pina, which also is an artists colony. It was great, high up over the Galilee, also above sea level. More what one would expect from such a place. We were very near Keryat Shmona. This was the place that we heard mentioned on the news many times during the recent unpleasantness. Tsfat was also attacked at that time.
