From the Minister's Study Congregation prepares to step out in faith By Brent Kipfer Brussels Mennonite Fellowship In early May, I found myself walking backwards over the side of a cliff, reassuring myself that rock- climbing ropes are made to be strong. Some people like this kind of thing. I am not one of them. Up to my left, a leadership coach yelled out encouraging words: "One step at a time. Let your body fall back so that you are perpendicular to the rock face. Relax your grip on rope." Slowly, gingerly, I made my way down. It took a long time but - to my surprise - those last few steps were kind of fun. I put a bit of bounce into my legs and it was almost starting to feel natural. Christian faith is a lot like that. It's easy to hear (and deliver!) sermons about it, theorize about different points of truth and discuss it with friends - but it is only in the experience of actually stepping out • Guild meets The September meeting of the Melville Guild was held in the church parlour on Tuesday evening, Sept. 12 with 10 members present. The purpose of the Women's Missionary Society was read in unison to open the meeting. Alice Marks read a poem, My Cup is Overflowing and the hymn, Take My Life and Let It Be was sung. Jean Bewley read the scripture, John 20: 1-3. Mrs. Bewley and Mrs. Marks read the meditation, I Have Seen the Lord. Mrs. Bewley led in prayer and Mrs. Marks read the topic, Embrace the Here and Now. Mrs. Marks read a story, Don't Worry, Be Happy. Oh Master, Let Me Walk With Thee was sung. Leona Armstrong presided over the business. She thanked Mrs. Bewley and Mrs. Marks for the devotions and also everyone for helping with the many funerals and Ruth Pipe's sale. The Guild voted to give the church managers $2,000. An invitation to the Maitland Presbyterial WMS fall rally, to be held on Sept. 18 in Ripley, was read. A discussion followed on who would be able to attend. The October meeting was discussed. It was decided to invite the Kincardine ladies and have a potluck lunch at 12:30 p.m. with the meeting to follow. Rev. Cathrine Campbell thanked the women for their help with the funerals and told about how the families appreciate the lunches and time of fellowship. The roll call was answered with everyone telling about a woman minister who had touched their lives. with Jesus that your faith becomes alive. When you trust him to lead you over the cliff, you discover that, indeed, Jesus will hold you up. A 16th century Christian, Hans Denck, wrote, "No one may truly know Christ unless one follows him in life." This fall, Brussels Mennonite Fellowship is stepping out in a new venture with God.
