Happy birthday Alice Brothers of Brussels celebrated her 90th birthday with an open house at the Brussels United Church on Saturday afternoon. The guest of honour and her husband were the Citizens of the Year for 2000 in Brussels and area. (Vicky Bremner photo) Plans continue to come together for the 135th Brussels Homecoming to be held July 27, 28 and 29. The planning committee has had several meetings and are now ready for the real work to begin. Co- chairs are Wayne Lowe, Gary Pipe and Don Sholdice. Fourteen were in attendance at the most recent meeting to offer input and share ideas. Some of the confirmed events include a parade, beef barbecue, pork chop barbecue, dance, community church service, the annual Tigers fastball tournament and a teen dance. Several other suggestions are being considered. The colours for 2007 party are red and white so people will be encouraged to plan their planting around that theme. The kick-off for the Homecoming will actually be held on Jan. 1 with a New Year's Levy at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. There will be family skating and a social afternoon. The next meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 18. at the Brussels Optimist Clubhouse. Organizers are still interested in hearing ideas and are always looking for volunteers. There are various committees in need of members so if anyone can help out, attend the meeting or call one of the co-chairs. The committee hopes to make the 135th celebration a party to remember, full of activities for 'young and old. A day to think about a very common boy who refused to give up and his wise parents who saw the impact he had on others. So many years after his death we remember how cancer has affected our lives. The call to support cancer research and to get out and physically do something, makes this a special day for many across this land of ours. Like many things in life we feel as if control is long gone but that doesn't mean we give up. So individually we try our best and collectively we support the good causes available. Thanks to the Leishman family for their many years of organizing this day and now to the Optimist Club for sustaining this work. Thanks to ail. Sunday was one of those days that said tour time. Elora, especially the conservation area has held good memories for me. It was a place of peace, in my nurse training days when several of us would grab the hot dogs and go to the park for some quiet time. As a-young mother it was a very fine spot to introduce boys to camping, frogs, salamanders and the Gorge. It's a great place to test the climbing and water skills and an efficient place to quickly tire boys out so their mother could read. So off to Elora way we headed. The fields on the ways were a canvas. Each one offered a new view of the cycle of life and a time to review the many blessings we have in Ontario. The Elora Gorge Park is part of the Grand River Conservation Authority and is the oldest water protection agency in Canada. In 1938 it became the guardian of the Grand River, a Heritage River that starts at the Luther March and ends in Lake Erie traversing 38 municipalities. That sounds pretty tough but they are also Mait-Side protecting 82 different species of fish and their habitat. So I had an excellent day enjoying the changes of nature and knowing the park of my past is just as good and perhaps better at offering life experiences to its many visitors. And yes frogs, -salamanders and the Gorge are all still there waiting to be enjoyed. As we head into the fall season the folks at the United Church would like to offer you something to look forward to. They are inviting you to go with them to the Sanderson Centre in Brantford to hear the Walters family on Dec. 1. Details will be coming soon but mark the day for a fun time with them. Bye now, Betty G.W. At the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald It's the last week. The Brussels Legion Branch's elimination draw is Saturday so there are only a couple of days to get your ticket if you don't have one. Stop in at the Branch and pick one up. Drop in Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. The Friday night supper of sausage and sauerkraut was enjoyed by a smaller crowd than usual. This week is sweet and sour meatballs. The men's Huron County dart league began play and held their event in Brussels this week. The fish fry crew was back at work on Sunday travelling to Exeter Legion to cook for 200 people.
