The growing number of female principals is something that is basically just keeping stride with the rest of the world, Rock said. "In the workplace we are seeing a lot more female leadership roles. As a new teacher, Gladys Rock first came to Hullett. After leaving there she spent several years teaching before beoming a consultant with what was then the Perth County Board of Education. She became a principal 13 years ago, and most recently was the administrator at Usborne school. The move from educator she said, began with her work as a consultant. "It's exciting to connect with former students and really neat to have Continued from page 14 attendance were divided up into several smaller discussion groups to brainstorm about the challenges facing the health care system. Although the concerns varied, there was a common thread--a lack of primary care available. Many people at the meeting talked about their difficulties in getting a doctor and expressed the opinion that the lack of doctors in the area is the biggest issue facing the system. Woolgar understands that concern. And, he says, the LHIN hopes to address it. "This isn't just moving the deck chairs around, " he said. "We are trying to address that. We will try to make it easier for people to find a family physician." One of the ways Woolgar says that can. happen is by creating a single place where someone who needs to access the health care system can go to find out how to get the service he or she needs. According to southwestern LHIN co-chair Kelly Gillis, there can be problems for people even when they know where to go for service. "We want to make it so people aren't telling their stories more than once," Gillis said, referring to the problem of medical providers not sharing information. Gillis said the LILINs will try to- address that, by making it easier for information to flow from one part of the system to another. Gillis told the meeting that the southwestern LHIN has identified community and the school staff has been terrific. "I believe everyone here wants these kids to do well. The parents are so supportive. That's a win-win for the kids." When she's not working, Rock who resides in the Mitchell area, fills four main priorities so far. She said the LHIN will aim to "strengthen and improve primary health care, prevent and manage chronic illness, build linkages for seniors... and adults with complex needs and to help people access the right services, in the right place." such as golfing and downhill skiing, and gardening. While these may be solitary pursuits, Rock has a real sense of team spirit and feels that Hullett exemplifies that as well. "Teams are very important and I have a sense of strong teams here, whether it's the parents and teachers or the staff. Those are all plusses for leadership." The group is continuing to seek public input prior to the release of its final plan.
