County council briefs County asked to share success with others Huron County's success in reducing its Workers Safety Insurance Board claims has brought a request to share its success with others. Darcy Michaud, the county's health and safety manager, is one of four people from across the province asked to sit on the WSIB Schedule 2 policy review panel, county councillors were told at their Sept. 7 meeting. The county opted to use the schedule two exemption in which it would buy private insurance to cover catastrophic injuries to employees and pay directly for other claims. As a result, reported Larry Adams, chief administrative officer, the county had spent $6,166 in claims in the first half of 2006. By comparison, the county paid $635,000 per ye'ar in WSIB premiums when it was part of the plan. Councillor John Bezaire pointed out that the difference in costs was not entirely a saving since the county had to pay premiums for the private insurance. *** Huron's Good Food Basket program has been praised by by Health Promotion Minister Jim Watson as a template for such programs, Penny Nelligan, director of the Huron County Health Unit told council. Nelligan said the comments came during a tour by Watson. The Good Food Box allows county residents to buy inexpensive boxes of fresh food once a month. Wherever possible the food is produced by county farmers. * * * The number of public day care spaces in Huron for children has increased by 71 per cent in the past six years, John MacKinnon, social services administrator told council. Six years ago there were 363 spaces in day care centres. With the completion of the additional spaces under the federal-provincial funding of the Best Start program, there will be 621 spaces. * * * County council awarded the tender for the new Wingham ambulance station at a special meeting on Aug. 8. Domm Construction Ltd. was the successful bidder to construct a three- bay centre on North St. in Wingham at a cost of $482,088. The project is to be completed by Dec. I. The completion of the new station will not affect the stationing of ambulance in Brussels, said David Lew, ambulance manager in answer to a question from Huron East councillor Joe Seili. Continued'from page 18 The general meeting of the UCW was announced for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28. This will be an open meeting for parents and young people who are approaching driving age, or are now driving cars. MADD representatives will be present with their demonstration and presentation. Anyone interested is invited to attend. *** The county won't award a tender for a new sand and salt storage facility at the roads departments Wroxeter yard this year after all. County engineer Don Pletch noted that the estimated cost of the structure was $250,000 and tenders were "all over the place". The $150,00 allotted for the structure will be put into next year's bud- get. * * * County residents who have long Mrs. Nixon presented the program by reading several excerpts from the book A Purpose Driven Life. She stressed in her talk the need for fellowship, confidentiality and building community in our church life. Christians need to protect their church fellowship, focus on what we have in common, be realistic in our expectations and choose to overdue materials borrowed from a county library branch have an opportunity between Oct. 16-22 to wipe their slate clean by returning the materials and bringing a donation to a local food bank. The "Food for Fines" event, to coincide with Ontario Public Library Week, has been proven in other areas to bring in long-overdue materials at a saving to the library and get people who were afraid of their fines using the library again. The beneficiaries are local food banks. 28 encourage, not criticize. She encouraged us to speak the truth in love, refuse to listen to gossip and give support to the leaders in the church. The next meeting will be at the home of Mabel Wheeler. The benediction was said, grace was sung and Donna Shaw and Mrs. Folkard served lunch. A social time followed. General meeting, Sept.
