On the weekend of Sept. 15-16,
Knox United Church congregation
in Belgrave will be celebrating its
81st anniversary with activities to
share their good fortune with people
in the Third World who are less
fortunate.
The weekend begins at 4 p.m. on
Friday with .a sale of Ten Thousand
Villages prOducts and a fall garden
produce sale. Shoppers are invited to
visit the Ten Thousand Villages
display in the church basement from
4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and
discover a beautiful assortment of
gifts and home decor items,
including fairly-traded coffee, tea,
and cocoa, musical instruments from
A joint meeting of the Afternoon
and Evening groups of Brussels
United Church Women met on
Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 5 at Maple
Villa with 17 women in attendante.
Edna Pearson welcomed all with
an amusing story and opened the
meeting with a call to worship.
Nelva Scott gave a reading and
prayer was followed by the hymn
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
with Betty Campbell accompanying.
Isabelle Wheeler gave the
treasurer's report. It was agreed that
the cheque from Foodland from the
grocery tapes would be applied to
the carpet cost. Mrs. Wheeler also
read several thank you cards.
The guest speaker was Sandra
Cable, lay minister in training. She
said there have been two words that
have been important in her life, safe
and trust. She relayed some of her
life history and faith journey by
sharing several moving experiences
in her life. These experiences and
her faith have been instrumental in
leading her into her new vocation.
Mrs. Cable has set goals to
increase the numbers of children
attending Sunday school, offering a
Bible study/discussion group,
beginning a confirmation class and
successfully completing her course.
She closed by sharing a reading
entitled Legacy of Faith.
Great is Thy Faithfulness was
Cameroon, baskets from Vietnam,
and toys from Sri Lanka.
Ten Thousand Villages is a non-
profit, volunteer organization
dedicated to providing a fair return
to farmers and craftspeople in the
Third World.
Proceeds from the fall produce
sale to be held at the same time will
go to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank
which provides food and emergency
relief to victims of drought, flood,
tsunami, or other catastrophes. Here,
shoppers will find reasonably-
priced, locally-grown fall garden
produce such as squash, onions,
garlic, bulbs, flowers, and preserves.
The proceeds from this sale will
supplement the money raised by
sung. Mrs. Scott gave the suggested
scripture, Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 which
speaks of the seasons. This was
followed by prayer. Mrs. Scott
presided for the business portion.
There will be joint meetings of the
afternoon and evening groups
whenever possible.
Correspondence was read
regarding holding an Alzheimer
Coffee Break. There was also a letter
from the Wingham and District
Community Living Association
offering speakers for meetings.
The next meeting -will be Tuesday,

growing 25 acres of corn dedicated
to the Foodgrains Bank. This
project, now in its fifth year, has
raised over $66,000 for world relief.
Due to the announcement by
Ontario Hydro that power will be cut
off to the area, the special
anniversary service originally
scheduled for Sept. 17 has been
postponed until Oct. 22. At that time
the guest speaker will be Ellie Van
Bergen from Varna-Goshen and the
children from the vacation Bible
school will be returning to sing. A
cold potluck .and anniversary cake
and ice. cream will follow the
service.
There will be no Sunday service at
Knox United in Belgrave on Sept. 17.
Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at Maple Villa with
Jeanette Boynton taking the topic.
