PAGE 7. Brewers Huron County fastball champs The Walton Brewers are the Men's Huron County Fastball A winners for 2006. The team played four games on the road to the victory in the double knockout tournament on the weekend. The first game was against the Atwood Avengers on Friday evening in the drizzling rain at the Wroxeter park. They defeated Atwood 7-0 with Scott Leonhardt pitching a one hitter. Their second game was against the Goderich Orioles where they earned the 2-0 win. Scott Leonhardt was on the mound again and pitched a one hitter. He struck out 19. The Exeter Braves were the next opponent on Saturday night. Again Leonhardt was on the hill and pitched another strong game winning 5-2. Outstanding player of that game was Matt Shortreed, going 2-4 at the plate and scoring 4 RBIs on a single and homerun. The top two teams to advance to the final were the Walton Brewers, with no losses and Exeter Braves with one loss. Sunday at Belmore's ball diamond was a beautiful afternoon to watch to good pitchers battle it out. Scott Leonhardt was again on the mound for Walton and Chris Annis was on the hill for Exeter. After three innings the ball game was scoreless with each team playing really well. In the fourth inning Exeter broke Rise and shine; it's back to school, or for me, the bus. It was a great first week back to work and seeing the familiar faces of my "kids" on the bus. Many have stories of what a great summer they had, stories on how.great it is to go back to school or sad stones on how it's not so great to being back to school. It's amazing to see how much the children have grown, changed and out with two runs on three hits. Walton responded by Steve Knight taking the walk and Mike Nolan stroking a triple to bring the Brewers within one. Scoreless fifth and sixth innings had the Walton fans on edge .but in the seventh Walton evened the score when Steve Hopf hit a single to centre with two out. He stole second, then Steve Knight's high high fly ball to centrefield was misplayed by the fielders, and Hopf evened the score. With the score tied at two the game went to extra innings. Bruce Pearn started at second base for the Brewers in the top of the eighth inning. Ron Strome laid down a great bunt which advanced the matured. There are the tentative faces of the little junior kindergarten children. It doesn't take long for the decisions to be made as to who sits where, especially at the back, who sits with whom and who plays with whom. Time changes and schedules are still being worked out as new students get worked into the pick up Continued on page 12 runner to third, and beat out the throw to be safe at first. Steve Hopf was again the hero, slicing a straight away single to centre which scored both runners for a two-run lead. In the bottom of the eighth Exeter placed their runner on second as well. Leonhardt struck out the first batter, the second batter hit an infield single to advance the runner and the next batter was walked intentionally to load the bases. Leonhardt went to work striking out the batter. The third out was a pop fly to third base. Walton Brewers defeated Exeter 4-2 in a fantastic game enjoyed by all the spectators. The Walton Brewers last won the Huron County Fastball League Championship in 2000 and were ecstatic to have won again in 2006. The team scored 18 runs and gave up only four runs in the four games. The MVP was Scott Leonhardt for his exceptionally strong Pitching on the weekend.
