Make the rounds of the grounds
with help from the movers
The people movers have grown
more popular over the course of the
Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby
Association Inc. reunions.
In fact, since 1993, thousands of
people have used the people movers
on a regular basis, to tour the
grounds of the show.
The people movers have proven so
popular, in fact, that over the years,
the number of units used has
increased from two to three and now
four. Of course, there are also more
people coming to watch the various
demonstrations.
Three were bought for the 1993
show, but only two were in working
operation the first year, as
volunteers had to do major work on
them.
Two years ago a fourth unit was
added.
The purpose of the people movers
is basically to take people through
the various aspects of the show.
They try and get to all the highlights
of the show.
One of the four units is equipped
for wheelchairs as it has a ramp and
a large viewing area.
The people movers go down
through steam engine alley, try and
get to the threshing demonstration
when it is being done and all the
other demonstrations as well as
when they are being put on.
There are designated pick-up and
drop-off points along the routes.
Every year there are many
volunteers who, not only serve as
drivers, but many a husband and
wife team serve as host riders. They
provide information about the
various attractions of the show and
also let the driver know if there are
people who want to get on or off at
a particular display or
demonstration.
The host riders change every two
hours, with the headquarters for the
people movers in the area of the old
log cabin.
Some people just enjoy hopping
on the people movers, then staying
on as it proceeds through the crowd
and the various attractions.
The tractors which are used to pull
the people movers are donated by
area farm equipment agencies and
those donations are much
appreciated.
