THRESHER
Man says Reunion helps
people appreciate past
REUNION
By Heather Dietz
Citizen staff
In our life of advanced technology
it's nice to be able to appreciate the
antique tractors and the way things
were done in the past.
This can be seen at this year's 45th
Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby
Association's annual Reunion.
One such fellow who has kept the
past in the future is Jim Sloan of RR
2 Chesley. He attended his first
Thresher Reunion at the age of 17
with his uncle Harold Sloan. That
also just happened to be the
Threshers first ever show in 1962.
Sloan can remember the race track
around the show grounds and there
was a field of corn surrounding the
area.
He has had ties with the Reunion
being president of the Threshers in
1990-1991 and chairman of the
steam engines in the mid 1990s.
Since 1992 he has had the pleasure
of being part of the re-building of the
sawmill each year.
Seeing this built each year brings
him much pleasure because of the
history involved. This sawmill is
powered by a steam engine.
Sloan was a co-organizer of the-
1997 display. He says "The mill is
run completely by 10 or more steam
engines. They come from Lucknow,
Auburn, Moorefield, Mitchell, St.
Thomas and London."
There are also two Sawyer
Masseys from Watford contributing_
to the running of the sawmill.
