THRESHER REUNION
1936 Pacemaker featured tractor at Reunion
When it came to restoring the
tractor, it didn't need very much work.
The engine was good and still running,
and the body was in good shape.
All the tractor needed was some
basic sanding, priming and prepping.
McNichol 'ordered the paint colour
from a distributor in the United States.
This task was Aubrey McNichol's
hobby that started in 1986. Being a
farmer, collecting the tractors brought
back memories, said Debbie Root,
Aubrey's daughter.
The McNichol family also has a
collection of mini toy antique tractors,
in various models and brands.
"We used to go from one toy show to
another," said Grace McNichol with a
smile.
The Massey-Harris company was
formed in 1891 through the efforts of
the Massey Manufacturing Company
in Toronto and A. Harris Son and
Company Limited.
At that time both of these companies
were leaders in the production of tools.
Massey-Harris purchased the J.I.
case Plow Works in 1928, which was
well-known for the production of the
Wallis tractor.
They introduced the 12-20 model
tractor in 1929, which was the basis
for the Pacemaker.
In 1953 Massey-Harris merged with
Harry Ferguson to form the Massey-
Ferguson company.
Massey-Ferguson went on to make
many models of the popular tractor.
"The Massey-Harris Pacemaker was
Dad's pride and joy," said Root

The 1936 Massey-Harris
Pacemaker is the featured tractor
model at the 45th annual Thresher
Reunion in Blyth.
The tractor is owned by the
McNichol family.
When Aubrey McNichol of Blyth,
learned that there was a 1936 Massey-
Harris Pacemaker in Wingham he had
to have it.
In 1986 he purchased the Pacemaker
from Glen Showers of Wingham. It
was in a barn that had collapsed on it.
The Pacemaker had a 27
horsepower, four cylinder engine.
This particular model is very rare,
due to it being green not red.
Massey-Harris hadn't decided on a
colour that would be its trademark
stamp, until 1938 when they changed
to the red that you see now. -
Along with the functional design of
early tractors went plain,
unimaginative paint jobs. Virtually all
were painted dark grey or green,
usuallj, with red wheels.
Aubrey who has since passed away
and his wife Grace were involved in
the Thresher Reunion for many years.
Grace says, "It must be over 25 years
that we have been going."
"We used to take the 101 Model
Massey-Harris into, the Reunion and
show it," says Grace.
The favourite part of the Thresher
Reunion for Grace McNichol would
have to be meeting and talking with
old friends.
For Debbie Rbot, she says that there
are many different aspects to the
Reunion, but most importantly it's
tradition. "It's something that you do
every year."
At the 1988 Thresher Reunion,
McNichol won best restored for his
1936 Massey-Harris Pacemaker, he
would have won it the previous year
but the tractor had car tires instead of
tractor tires.
