Entertainment Theatre review Leisure great performance by Feore `Juan' By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor It really makes you wonder if CoIm Feore is capable of any- thing less than a wonderful performance. As the morally-corrupt womanizer Don Juan in Moliere's play of the same name, now in production at Stratford's Avon Theatre, Feore gives a nuanced portrayal of the protagonist's many faces. And in doing so, manages to even make this roué likeable. First performed in 1665, Don Juan received a lukewarm reception, and raised controvery. Moliere was accused by his critics of attacking the interests of Heaven and insulting King Louis XIV. The play was never again The Blyth Festival Singers are ready for a new season. Anyone who enjoys singing in an excellent community choir is invited to join the 27th season of the Blyth Festival Singers. Rehearsals for the 2006-2007 season began on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m. in the June Hill Room, above the Blyth Festival administration offices. A softer version was presented in 1677, written by Thomas Corneille and held the stage for the next two years. In 1947, however, the celebrated French actor, director and teacher Louis Jouvet mounted a production of Moliere's original play. It was recognized then as a masterwork. Don Juan is a compulsive seducer, whose most recent conquest was Dona Elvira, whom he spirited from a convent. Once winning the pure Elvira's heart, he finds the flame of his desire has extinguished and he leaves her to follow his amorous desires. Throughout, his servant, Sganarelle hopes for a transformation and encourages his master, who is also an atheist, to make up our unique community are diverse, but they share a profound passion for singing. The season will offer both well-known compositions and those that may not be as familiar, but all the music will be presented in a dynamic and moving fashion." The choir will prepare for three concerts this season: Make We Merry, Dec. 3, North Street United Church, Goderich, a Christmas performance with the national, award-winning St. Mary's Children's Choir; Home: A Place in The Heart, April 1, a musical repent. The adventurer is being pursued by Elvira's brothers who are seeking revenge for their family's dishonour. However, having had his life saved by Don Juan before knowing his identity, Don Carlos feels he owes him another day to find a way to make amends. Otherwise, the next day they meet, he warns, will be Don Juan's last. Both Don Juan's father and a re- converted Elvira visit as well to warn the hedonist that his unrepentent lifestyle will be the end of him, A visit to the tomb of the Commander, whom Don Juan had killed, begins the journey to his undoing. The scene changes are like swiftly moving tableaux that keep the story flowing. Set design by Daniele Levesque has a surreal quality, a mix of reality and illusion. Costume designer Francois St- Aubin period pieces have a whimsical appeal that transcends eras. They are light-hearted and ambitious. Feore's many changes are as frequent as his romantic interludes. While Feore is clearly the star Benoit Briere as his servant's equally noteworthy. His entreaties to his master, attempting to point out his many flaws, while acknowledging the social hiearchy, make for some of the play's most amusing moments. Briere is enough of a clown to make you smile, but not so much as to be ridiculous. Don Juan entertains in its telling of this anti-hero.
