without an invitation."
"What is behind the door or

secrets might be revealed on entry?
What lies on the other side? Who
hides beyond? Why do we create
these barriers? What balance resides
between the seeming contradictions
of security and access?"

Through his camera lens, Jerry
McDonnell of Blyth is drawn toward
doorways and windows as he
captures photographic images that
record eye-catching memories.
"These portals are intriguing
because of their sense of mystery
and their sense of barrier," he says.

McDonnell is the feature member
artist at the Goderich Co-op Gallery,
on Courthouse Square, for the full
month of September, Monday to
Saturdays, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.,
daily.
For McDonnell, photography is a
medium for artistic expression. It is
much more than a quick and easy
way to record family and personal
events. As he has grown beyond
snapshots to an era of producing fine
images, he has learned to see the
truly artistic aspect of photography.
. His perceptions have been
heightened by taking courses at the
Haliburton School -of the Arts and
the digital photo imaging workshops
at Elizabeth's Art Gallery, in
Goderich.
Following a career in teaching and
community volunteer work, along
with raising a family, he began to
devote more time and effort to his
growing passion with photography.
For 1.0 years he has been building his
skills.
"Aging buildings, and other less-
than-perfect objects, continue to be
of interest because of their historic
and associations and their artistic
value," he declares. "Decay is part
of the cycle of life and death - and it
needs to be captured and preserved
in these ways."
His concern for recording the past
was sparked many years ago, in the
1960s when the City of Stratford
chose to tear down its handsome
stone post office, which included a
fine tower and a magnificent clock.
His 'snap shots' at that time have
managed to preserve the building for
all time.
Today, McDonnell's work shows a
fine technique and an eye for
composition. He works with
traditional film, as well as with
digital imaging. Since 2003, his
experiments with infrared film have
10:05 a.m. from Brussels and 10:20
a.m. from Walton. Return trips head
out starting at 1 p.m.

resulted in some striking images.
(Infrared film must be handled in
complete darkness. A red filter on
the camera blocks most of the visible
light and the film reacts to the non-
visible parts of the spectrum. Water
presents as black; plants with
chlorophyll glow vibrantly.
A ,trip to Portugal, in January of
2006, inspired the new images
firesented in the September show at
the Goderich co-op Gallery. History
and architecture provided abundant
inspiration. A review of the images
reveals McDonnell inspired yet
again by portals: his inimitable
attraction to doors and windows.
McDonnell's photos have been
exhibited at the Blyth Festival Art
Gallery, the OSSTF Gallery in
Toronto, Earth Spirit Cafe in Blyth,
and, -Tango Bistro in Stratford. They
can be found in private collections
across Canada.
