PAGE 13. From the Minister's Study God has called parents to teach children By Rev. Cathrine Campbell Melville, Brussels Knox, Belgrave Presbyterian Churches Moses tells the people in Deuteronomy "Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb when he said to me "assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children" (Deuteronomy 4:10). And the Psalmist tells us "We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next Continued from page 1 slightly lower than last year's, with 175 students currently enrolled. Hullet welcomes new principal Gladys Rock, along with three other new staff members. There were some adjustments made to this year's school year, specifically regarding professional development days. The Ministry of Education has mandated two additional days raising the number from four to six. As a result of adding two more PD days, the Board has cancelled all early dismissal days. Blyth. East Wawanosh, Grey and Hullet along with 29 other elementary schools in the Avon Maitland board will be operating under the balanced school day schedule. This means the school day will be divided into three, 100 minute learning segments with two 40 minute nutrition breaks. Over the 2006-2007 year Avon Maitland schools will be launching a number of new citizenship initiatives. This is aimed at developing positive citizenship qualities in the students. There are 10 attributes that the schools and communities will focus on. They are fairness, honesty, empathy, respect, integrigy, courage, optimism, compassion, perseverance and responsibility. BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children."( Psalm 78:4-6 ) You have probably noticed a pattern. We, as the people of God are given great gifts, by God, and we are to declare both the source and the thanksgiving to all people. There is never to be a time when God's goodness and mercy are forgotten or thanks not expressed for the Salvation given by the life and death of Jesus Christ. And, therefore, we are called to teach our children. The Church of Christ responds with a form of higher education - our Sunday schools. The Sunday school is the best and longest lasting gift that a child will receive in his or her lifetime; for it is here that he or she is given the grounding in understanding a moral code, a call to be an active citizen and to interact with different generations in a non-threatening environment. I strongly encourage all parents and grandparents to take their children to the church of their choice to enable them to get a good start in life. At the same time the children will be attending school and it is the wish of all of us that they do well, find new friends and learning, and enjoy what has been prepared for them. To all parents and students I offer the following: 10 Tips to Ensure a Good School Year 10. Parents, remember your school days - and either encourage or discourage your child from following in your footsteps. 9. Make sure there is a comfortable and well-lit area to do homework. 8. Expect your children to be respectful to their teachers and do not be disparaging about them in their presence. 7. Expect your children's teachers and school authorities to be respectful to their students. Civility is a two way street. 6. Ensure that every day starts with a proper breakfast. 5. Listen when they come home - not only to what they say but what they don't say. 4. Don't sweat the small stuff - hair or lack of it can be remedied - remember the "must-haves" of your youth. 3. They do need the books and supplies - they probably don't need the navel piercing. 2. A good education system is a sign of a healthy society - keep it well by being interested and involved in our schools. 1. All children are precious in God's sight and a gift to us and the future. In return we must/give them the best care and education available. The saying "It takes a village to raise a child" is very true and all of us, parents or not, have a responsibility to ensure the best for the children of this community. Have a good year! Ministry of Education mandates extra PD days HOW DO YOU GET ASTHMA? Possible risk factors for the development of asthma include: • Family history of allergies, asthma and eczema • High exposure to airborne allergens (pet, dust mites, mould) in the first years of life • Exposure to tobacco smoke • Frequent respiratory infections early in life • Low birth weight and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) at birth
