Congregants socialize before service Congregants arriving at Londesborough United Church on Sunday, Sept. 3 were able to socialize before the service over coffee and muffins graciously offered by Gordon and Darlene Shobbrook. Kerri Grant shared her talents during the service as organist. Flowers on the memorial stand that morning had been placed in memory of Kent Shillinglaw by his family. Kent left us suddenly and too soon several years ago on this Labour Day weekend. To begin the children's time Rev. Pat Cook held up a piece of paper and queried as to what we saw. The sheet of white paper had a black dot in the centre. Most people would answer that they saw a black dot. The parallel to life was that the white area represented most of the time when a person lived an honest and good life doing what he/she should. Occasionally a sin or slip would cause a black dot. Unfortunately that black dot is how others might remember us no matter how hard we might try to stay in the white area. The book of James is known to be a down to earth or practical text to read and to understand. Rev. Cook read James 1: 17-27, a set of verses that encourage followers to be doers in the world not just listeners to the word. Jesus asked Christians to "Follow Me." He wanted discipleship or performance. James points out that every good thing in life comes from God and that He will bless those that do. However Rev. Cook warned about listening only to the surface of a passage instead of looking deeper into its message. Christians should work toward fulfilling that deeper message in every day living beyond one's ordinary "safe" zone, for Villagers offer condolences to Jack and Helen Lee and their family. Jack lost his sister, Hazel Rivers, rather suddenly on Saturday, Aug. 26. Hazel and her husband, Maurice, lived in Tweed, Ontario where the funeral services were held last Wednesday. New members are always welcome. Apparently there are some extra and special activities planned for that afternoon. Classes have resumed at Hullett Central for another year with a number of staff changes. According to the newsletter handed out during the final week of June, the classes example, as did the good Samaritan. Rev. Cook finished by saying, "Go out and follow God's call."
