CHEVROLET
THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 7, 2006. PAGE 9.
It was a weekend of parties. One
party was for Cindy (McCallum)
Poland's 30th birthday. It was a
surprise when she arrived to camp at
the back of the family farm to find
friends and relatives in attendance
from the area to help celebrate the
next decade of her life.
Many spent the weekend camping
after the Saturday night party. The
weekend barbecue and potluck was
enjoyed by all. Birthday cake topped
off the celebrations.
Returning in time to enjoy the
party were sister Colleen and new
husband Scott Bromley.
They were on their honeymoon in
the Dominican Republic. The
weather was beautiful, food great
and they enjoyed the rest and
relaxation following their Aug. 19
wedding.
Another surprise party was held
for Ken and Judy Shortreed to
celebrate 35 years of wedded bliss.
The party was planned and attended
by nearly 50 family and friends.
There was a catered meal by the
Walton Women's Institute and
entertainment by friends.
Ken and Judy's children children
Jim, Rob., Kendra and Amy and their
It was a combination holiday and
Masters fastball vacation in North
Bay for 12 of our finest Walton
McGavin Farm Supply fastball men.
Many of them travelled to North Bay
in the deluxe motorhome driven by
Steve Rathwell. They arrived late
Thursday night and spent Friday
golfing and relaxing in preparation
of their first game Friday night
against the Fraser team of North
Bay.
At their first at-bat the Walton
boys started strong with back-to-
back singles by Steve Knight and
Larry Lowes. Both runs scored on a
hard hit double by Kevin Roulston.
Doug Conley was on the mound
for Walton and started the game off
well striking out the first two batters
before giving up a single that
eventually scored.
The Walton boys went to bat in the
second, with Doug Conley, Jim
McDonald and Dave Fisher all
hitting doubles and Floyd Upshall
hitting a single to score three more
runs.
The boys shut out Fraser with no
batters reaching base in the second.
The Walton team failed to score
any runs in the third but gave up one
run to the Fraser team.
In the fourth inning, Walton sent
seven batters to the plate, scoring
one run and leaving three men on.
Conley finished up the games
facing only four batters and striking
two out.
It was a good game with only a
few errors. Walton won.6-2.
The second game of the round-
robin was against the North Bay
Merchants on Saturday morning.
Walton was again the visiting team
and started off slowly sending only
four batters to the plate. Larry Lowes
had hit a single hit.
Floyd Upshall was on the mound
for Walton and retired the first three
batters.
spouses and children were in
attendance. Special guest was Ken's
mother, Isabel Shortreed of Seaforth.
Yet another party was held at the
home of Jeanne Kirkby to celebrate
early the event of her 65th birthday
which will be in November. Close to
50 people gathered in the shed to
enjoy the afternoon of visiting. Upon
arrival guests were introduced and
had to tell everyone what their
favourite thing is.
A meal prepared by the Walton
United Church ladies was served.
Jeanne's son Paul and wife Van, and
friends of the couple, also served
fresh spring roll hors d'oevres.
Joe and Rhonda Ryan held a
retirement party for Dave Hastings,
retiring road superintendent for Grey
and Wayne (Buck) Dolmage for
McKillop.
The party was held at the Ryan
home with many family, friends, co-
workers in attendance for the social
afternoon and the meal in the
evening.
We send wishes for a speedy
recovery out to Kyle McNichol who
suffered a broken leg on the
weekend.
Congratulations to Calvin and
Dianne Flood on the birth of a third
son, Carson Joel. The Flood version
of my three sons includes older
brothers Hayden and Jacob who are
of course, thrilled. Grandparents are
Frank and Grace Dolmage and
Clarence Flood.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Hemingway family on the
passing of Don Hemingway of
Manitoba. Sisters Marion -Godkin
and Ruth Axtmann travelled to the
west to attend the services along
The second inning saw no runs
scored by either team but the
Merchants turned a nice double play
on Walton.
The game was broken open in the
third by Walton starting with a lead-
off walk to Steve Rathwell. A beauty
bunt by Dave Fisher advanced him
and Brad Knight's hard-hit single
drove. Steve home to put Walton on
the score sheet 1-0.
The Merchants rebounded by
scoring a run in the third as well to
tie the game up. The fourth inning
belonged to Walton.
The inning started with Roulston's
lead off double, followed by a line
drive single by Rick McDonald that
ricocheted off the first baseman's
leg. Pinch runner Larry Lowes stole
second and Doug Conley cashed in
the runs with a monster home run to
deep centrefield. Walton's Brian
Neil continued the hitting streak
with a short fly to centre then stole
second. A walk to McDonald and
another to Rathwell loaded the
bases. Another walk to Fisher, after
taking a foul ball off the helmet,
scored another Walton run. A well
hit single by Upshall scored another
two and Knight got on by being hit
by a pitch. Lowes hit a single and
Roulston doubled again.
Walton scored 10 runs in the
fourth.
The Merchants scored two runs in
the bottom and the victory 11-3 went
to Walton.
The team went into the third game
of the round-robin with high hopes
but came away with a disappointing
result against a strong batting
Durham Oland Exports team from
Nova Scotia.
Lowes went to the hill for Walton
and gave up three singles and a
grand slam homerun in facing the
first four batters.
Walton rallied with Steve Knight

with husbands Lavern Godkin and

There was a wonderful attendance
at Duff's United Church Walton for
the first Sunday services following
the August holidays. A special
presentation was made by Rene

community and her husband

their many years together.
Congratulations to Phyllis.
Special music was produced

plowing match was held near Exeter
this year.
Neil and Brandon McGavin also
travelled to the Bruce County
Plowing Match near Paisley the next
week. Brandon again was successful
in placing first in his group.
Congrats to all the McGavins,
Melady and Dodds boys.
The summer has flown by and it's
time to get back to school and bus.
The children are excited so everyone
be aware and slow down. Little ones
getting on the bus for the first time
need time to learn, look and watch
for traffic so watch for the flashing
lights of the school bus.
Congratulations to Art Bolton who
celebrated his 75th birthday on the
weekend. Family and friends

social time.
