For the school crowd Labour Day
Monday weather said it all. Overcast
skies, cool temperatures, a touch of .
drizzle. It seemed to say, change
gears, time to really think about
school tomorrow.
Time to check the backpacks, sock
supply and pencils and paper. Yes,
it's time to get in the swing of
school.
It's an exciting time as new
teachers and friends become part of
ALYSSA GOWING
Alyssa Gowing is the daughter of
Paul and Jacquie Gowing of RR2,
Bluevale. A Grade 12 student at F.E.
Madill, Gowing worked as a
lifeguard and at Wescast this past
summer. She will continue to work
as the treasurer of the Western
Ontario Team Cattle Penning
Association. Gowing rides horses
competitively, runs cross-country
and plays hockey.
A life-long participant in the fair,
through exhibition of schoolwork,
crafts and baking, as well as riding
in the parade, Gowing said she is
excited to have the same experience
her mom did when she competed for
the title at the age of 16.
Gowing is sponsored by Huronlea
Auxiliary.
life again, a time to learn new things
and expand ideas. Indeed it's time to
learn and grow.
Lots of stories have been flying
here the past few days as Barry
Watson and his son David from
Tuscon and St. Paul catch up with
friends and cousins in the area.
Barry was one of four sons that Gene
and Reg Watson raised here and the
stories of vehicles, school and farm
frolics would make most folks just
shake their head. It had to do with
mixing brothers Bert, Barry, Jim and
Joe with cousins Ralph and John and
toss in a Mel McArter, Bob
McCutcheon, Dale McTaggart and
various other neighbours and friends
and things always just seemed to
happen.
Pitchforks, car races with custom-
made parts were but a few of the
stories shared.
Gatherings of this kind are a joy to
see as stories that are vivid to one are
but a faint memory to another. It's
also great fun to watch their children
stare in wonder as these shenanigans
are revealed in minute details with
great laughter that only memory
causes. Some things are perhaps
better kept for another 20 years
years then the grandkids would have
a whole new view of Grandpa.
Congratulations to Eric Coates
and the entire crew at the Blyth
Festival. Another good year once
again supporting new Canadian
talent and the local economy. The
board needs to be recognized for its
support of new plays and the
courage to try four brand new ones
in this season just past.
Each play was excellent and filled
a need of the audience. Good
choices and thank you for
another season of excellent
entertainment.
When you think about what makes
community every person has a
different answer and each generation
sees another area that needs to be
better.
Several groups have been planning
ways to improve our river and dam
arca. Walking and seated areas,
picnic and bathroom facilities,
memorial garden and lighting were
all part of a plan to improve our
village.
Led by the Optimist Club with the
support of the Lions, the Hydro
Trust, the Horticulture Club, the
Lodge and Huron East plans have
been drawn, a Trillium grant
obtained and Work has been started
to make this another area that you'll
want to stroll by often.
Be sure to check the booth at the
fair that will answer your questions
on how you .can support this
community project.
Thinking about the fair it's time to
start planning your entries. It's less
