Their son John and his wife Pat arrived at their home with dinner and flowers to surprise the couple. The Brussels birthday gang gathered to celebrate a former Walton girl's 80th birthday this week. Many friends of Mary Huether met in Bayfield at the cottage of Jim and Dona Knight..., The 22 ladies then went to JD's for a wonderful birthday luncheon, while the nine or so men stayed at the cottage for a barbecue. Attending the afternoon celebrations were Jack and Donna Knight, Leslie and Yvonne Knight, Harvey and Marion Smith, Joe and Bev Smith, Betty Knight, Jean Bewley, Elunid McNair, Mary Davidson, Margery Huether, Leona and Karin McDonald, Cliff and Marion Morrow, Fran Bremner, Nora Stephenson and granddaughter Katie, Marilyn McDonald, Mac and -Merle McIntosh, Joyce Lake, Isabel Wheeler, neighbours Roger and Olivia and Casey and Betty McCutcheon. During the afternoon birthday cake and ice-cream were served and Mary opened her many lovely cards. Sunday afternoon a shower was held at Cranbrook Hall for the bride- to-be of Craig Gillis, Tanya Shipp.... Many relatives, neighbours and friends were on hand to enjoy the afternoon. Celebrating that 50 is nifty was Gloria Wilbee last week. Hosts Fred and Heidi McClure had Gloria and husband Keith for dinner, then many other friends arrived to party on and celebrate. The dozen or so friends included the hosts, Carmen and Mary. Bernard, Paul and Dianne McCallum, Patty Banks, Judy Emmrich, Val Shortreed, Evelyn Gulutzen, Stan and Donna McClure, Don and Pat Dalton and Brian Wilbee. Participating at the Teeswater Fair demolition derby on the weekend was Gerrid Dalton. He managed a third-place finish for the night. Clyde and Cathy McClure were the host family for the Hagedorn family picnic on the weekend. There were between 40 - 50 there to enjoy a potluck supper and Clyde's sweet corn feast. Off to enjoy a Blue Jay's game was the Eckert family with Grandma Dianne Machan. A bus for Campbell Soup employees and family was arranged. The game was between Toronto and Kansas City. Dianne, Steve, Tracy, Kelsey, Cariss a, Cassidy and Tyler, had a great day together. Great news that Jim Blake is home from hospital. He is looking pretty good and feeling pretty well but still has a ways to go. Visitors are welcome but call before dropping in • as Jim has physio to go to and might not be there. The Bernard family reunion was held on the weekend. The siblings of Tom Bernard gathered at the home of Gord and Irma Pryce. Nearly 70 enjoyed games, a potluck picnic and reviewing and adding to the family tree information. A group of young men-were off to Ford Field in Detroit for a concert on the weekend. Performing were country artists Dirks Bentley, Carrie 4Thderwood, Gretchen Wilson and headliner Kenny Chesney. Enjoying it were Darryl Houston, Chris Blake, Barry Young, Kevin Murray, Steve Carnochan, Greg Medd, Rob McClure, Steve Henderson, Craig Sommerville, Jason Denys and Scott McDonald. Wedding hells rang on Saturday for Bob Steiss and Ang Sills at the Cranbrook Church. Bob is the son of Stewart and Madeline Steiss. The wedding was at 14 a.m. and was attended by nearly 60 family and friends. The wedding party and guests then went to the Steiss farm for a small luncheon before heading off for the dinner and reception at the Sills family farm outside of Orangeville. The beautifully-decorated tent, in colours of blue and white, was adorned with bouquets of fresh- flowers on the tables. There were around 100 on hand to enjoy a delicious meal and -the evening's entertainment. Mary Humphries was busy on the weekend with family members. Son Bob and wife Nora arrived Saturday and after a trip to Listowel enjoyed the day together. - On Sunday, daughter Kim and husband George, with boys Andrew and Bryce, arrived for a family get- together before Andrew is off to George Brown College in Barrie. It's official that George and Gloria Love have moved to Clinton. A nice young man has moved into the former Love home and it looks like some renovating is in progress. I'm sure we will see George around the village occasionally. Good luck to both of you and don't forget to come back to visit the Walton area. Celebrating with her family for her.80th birthday was Mary Huether. Daughter Joyce and „husband Roger Tipple of Burlington were-the hosts in their beautifully decorated backyard. The family included Jonathon, Jocelyn and Owen Tipple, Brian and Dianne Huether, Sherry and Jeff, Dave, Angie, Jeff and Kevin Huether and Gary, Joan, Christopher and Kaitlin Ritchie. They enjoyed a dinner and a day of visiting. Neil and Marie McGavin were the hosts for the Johnson cousins get- together. Cousins from British Columbia were here to attend the Peacock wedding in Wroxeter. The McGavins invited the many area cousins to their home for a delicious supper and visit. It's back to school for our many local young people. Our daughter Kelly is already back to the University of Toronto to continue her program in x-ray technician. She was accepted as a floor manager so had to go two weeks early for training sessions in first aid, counselling and conflict resolution. She reports her first week and the team members she's with were great. Rick- and Jo-Ann McDonald and Jason and LeeAnn Konarski were off to a wedding in Staffa on Saturday. It was a casual tent wedding for Jo-Ann's niece, Chris and new husband Trevor that was enjoyed by nearly 140 guests. The rain didn't affect the picture taking after the p.m. nuptials but did make it slightly muddy and damp when venturing outside. Final holidays with Grandma and Grandpa Hackwell are being - enjoyed by Pat and Sebastian Andrades. Sebastian is helping clean up the garden, visiting Uncle Elliott and taming the new cat Jake. Hopefully Jake stays away from the road. As I write this Monday morning the drone of a helicopter is heard. immediately think of the air ambulance and hope for the best. A short time later I hear the drone again. I then learned from a caller that the Brussels Agromart was hosting a day for their customers and helicopter rides were booked in. What- a great idea and I heard from one rider and son that it was awesome. Services resume at Duff's Sunday Duff's United Church, Walton resumes services this Sunday. A special recognition and presentation will be made to the Citizen of the Year, Phyllis Mitchell, so plan to attend the service at 9:30 a.m. The UCW will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. with guest speakers from the Seaforth and District Food Bank. Donations for the food bank would be appreciated and tooni'es for friendship will be collected. It's anniversary time again and Duff's_ will celebrate on Sept. 10. The guest speaker will be Bruce Whitmore, so encourage your family to attend the 141st anniversary. The UCW ladies served the dinner for the McCallum/Bromley wedding and will soon be making plans for the turkey supper. It wasn't just the bands that were cooking at the Global Battle of the Band.
