Theatre troupe presents show in Blyth
Members of the Bunkaza Theatre
from Tokyo, Japan will visit the
Blyth Festival on Thursday, Aug. 3
they invited people to attend their
30-minute musical presentation of
folk songs in the lower hall of Blyth
Memorial Community Hall at 6:30
p.m.
The Blyth Festival has organized a
community dinner that night at 5
p.m. People are to bring an appetizer,
cold salad or dessert to share with
others.
No tickets are required.
Bunkaza is one of the leading
theatre companies in Japan with 65
years history. It has 75-plus
company members. Though they are

After touring southern Ontario
studios curators from the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery selected an
artist whose work will close the
2006 season of exhibitions with a
blaze of colour.
The opening reception for At First
Light is on Friday, Aug. 11 at 6 pm.
The show features the work of
Elora native Tim Murton, who
studied internationally and spent 18
years working on scenic art in the
Toronto film industry. His oil
paintings of landscapes and forest
scenes are brightly coloured, highly
realistic and large in scale.
The subject matter is found in the
area around his country home, and
the art works reflect his obvious
love of the environment. They are
always inspired by the qualities of
light and according to show curator
Greg Sherwood, are "...intricate,
colourful...intimate portrayals of the
landscape that delight in exploring
the balance between order and
chaos...".
Central to the work is the
significance of light, especially
sunlight penetrating into dark
spaces.
The public is invited to meet the
artist at the opening.
The show continues until Sept.8.
The gallery is located in the Blyth
Memorial Hall beside the Festival
box office and is open to the public
during Tuesday to Saturday from 10
am to 9 pm.
Admission is free.

based in Tokyo, they tour extensively
across Japan to be true to their
mandate which is to provide
grassroots people with a theatre of
high artistic quality and
entertainment value.
The 30-minute show they are
bringing to the Blyth Festival
consists of a series of shamisen-
accompanied folk songs that used to
be sung by Goze — female travelling
entertainers who had been popular in
the north eastern part of Japan before
the radio and television age dawned.
"The 22 members of the Bunkaza
Theatre group are being hosted by
families in the area and are coming
to Blyth specifically to see the Aug.

Harvest at the Festival later that
evening," said Jane Gardener, the

travelling with Yoshi Yoshihara, a
Blyth supporter who has translated a
number of plays that premiered at
the Blyth Festival and have been
produced by this Japanese touring
ensemble."
Ai Sasaki, who is well known in
Japan not only as a stage actress but
also as a film/ TV star, will lead the
group of six performers to provide
guests with a rare opportunity to
enjoy the rustic charm of Japanese
folk music.
After Bunkaza's performance in
Blyth, they travel to Vancouver on
Aug. 4 to perform at Powell Street
Festival (a Japanese Canadians'
Annual Get-Together) in Vancouver.
Yoshihara who is co-ordinating the
tour of Bunkaza Theatre has become
Japan's foremost translator of
Canadian drama, an active producer
of Canadian work through Maple
Leaf Theatre and the creator of a
major market for Canadian plays in
Japan.
Anne Chislett's Quiet In The Land
that premiered in Blyth in 1982
played last fall in Tokyo. Translated
into Japanese by Toyoshi Yoshihara,
Quiet in the Land is a dramatic tale
of Canadian Mennonites.
"What Japanese theatregoers like
about Canadian plays seems to be
simplicity and straight-forwardness,"
says Yoshihara. "In the 70s there
were no such gizmos as VCRs or
tape recorders, and going to a theatre
to see the same show repeatedly was
the most effective and cheapest way
to master colloquial English and
hone my hearing skill."
The first Canadian play that
Yoshihara translated was Chislett's
The Tomorrow Box and with a Tokyo
production in 1985 that successful
production opened up great
opportunities for Canadian plays to
be produced in Japan. The Tomorrow
Box, which premiered in Blyth in
1981, has toured every major
Japanese city and has been seen by
over 200,000 people.
