U-15 Girls win finals
It was high-scoring battle July 25
when the Ethel Mites hosted
Brussels.
The contest showed two well-
matched teams as each inning ended
in a tie. At the bottom of the first it
was 7-7. The second inning brought
the score to 12-12. Each team added
seven more in each of the third and
fourth innings.

By Kerissa Van Amersfoort
At the beginning of the U-15 girls
soccer season, the coaches (Kerissa
Van Amersfoort and John Uyl) asked
the girls what their goal was for the
season. They all said they wanted to
win the final in the year-end
tournament.
The girls knew they had their work
cut out for them. After season play, the
girls finished with a positive outlook
moving into the tournament coming
away with only two wins in regular
season but knowing that they had
improved and could come away with
many more wins.
The first game into the tournament,
Blyth met up with the St. Columban II
team. Being a little nervous going into
playoffs they played the whole game
with 110 per cent effort. Blyth came
away with an easily-handled 6-3 win
with goals scored by Jory-Lynn Uyl,
Laura Youngblut and Aryn Kikkert and
assists going to Kikkert, Uyl and
Brittany Bos.
The second game of the tournament
was played against the Lucknow II
team. Having played the night before
and coming away with a huge win, the
girls had a lot of fire under them and
were keen to play a more difficult
team. The girls had not met this team
yet in regular season so they did not
know what to expect. They took this to
their advantage and played an
excellent game.
Although the teams were very close
in calibre, Blyth pushed through and a
goal was scored by. Uyl, assisted by
Youngblut and Kikkert to make the
final score 1-0, guaranteeing them a
spot in the semi-finals. They were one
step closer to their goal.
The third game in round-robin play
was played against the Wingham team.
During regular season, Blyth came
away with a 6-2 win, but knew they
could not slack because Wingham had
improved. This game would determine
which place they would be going into
the semi-finals, first or second.
Wingham scored early in the first
half, but the girls came back to tie it.
Wingham proceeded to put on the
pressure scoring one more.
Late in the first half, Blyth pulled it
together scoring one more to make it
an even game 2-2. Goals were scored
by Kikkert and Uyl, with an assist
going to Kikkeit.
The second half had no goals which
meant that the girls had to experience
their first-ever shootout with five
shooters each. After the shootout,
Blyth lost 3-0 putting them in second
place going into semi-finals, which
meant that they had to play the
defending champions and a team that
they had not yet beaten during regular
season, St. Columban I.
Knowing what they had to do, the
girls played with more heart this game
than they ever had all season. St.
Columban came out with an early 1-0
lead and doubled their score by the end
of the first half.
Having an in-depth conversation
during halftime and being down by
two, the girls went into the second half
with nothing to lose and playing better
than ever. Uyl scored early in the
second half making the score 2-1, with
the assist going to Hannah Uyl. With
many opportunities and an injury to
Bos, Blyth kept pushing through. Very
late in the second half, Bos begged to
be put back on the field. Once there,
she was determined to get a goal, and
that she did with less than a minute left
in the game with the assist coming
from J. Uyl and Kikkert, making the
score 2-2 and resulting in a shootout.
Having bad luck in the previous
game with a shootout, the girls were
very nervous. After all, this was the
game they had to win to mom on to
the finals.
Bos, the first shooter, put it in the
corner. J. Uyl was second shooter but
the goalie, was quick and saved her
shot. H. Uyl was the third and once
again, the goalie was too quick.
Youngblut was the fourth shooter and
put it in making it a tied game after the
fourth shooters. Danielle Bean, the
fifth and last shooter, put it in.
This was it, next shot would make
all the difference, and that it did.
Chantel Warwick saved St.
Columban's last shot which gave Blyth
the win and they were moving on to
the finals.
Warwick saved one penalty shot in
regular time during this game and
three of them in the shootout.
In the final game of a successful
season, Blyth was to play Clinton in
the finals. They had also lost to Clinton
in the regular season, but the girls had
already proven to themselves that it
didn't matter. Right now was what
counted.
Once again, playing with more heart
than anyone else on the field, the girls
played an outstanding game. Blyth
came away with an early lead in the
first half, 2-0 with goals scored by Bos
on a free kick from about 30 yards out
and J. Uyl from Bos on a corner kick.
The score stayed this way for the
remainder of the game. Blyth U-15
girls scored their goal. They won the
finals.
As the coach, it was a privilege
coaching a team with so much
chemistry and heart. It is not very
often you find a team like this who
goes into every game with a positive
attitude no matter who it is you are
meeting up with. I was asked by
someone, that if I were to give out an
MVP award, who would I give it to?
Honestly, there is not one person who
did not deserve an MVP award,
because they all worked together to
attain the goal. They are all most
valuable players and deserved this 100
per cent. They worked hard all season,
and I knew that this is what they can
achieve and they did.
Although this is only my second
year coaching soccer, I have never had
so many compliments on a team.
The girls have no idea how awesome
it was to be their coach this season.
Congratulations and thanks for a
great season ladies!
