THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 3 2006. Sports Short Putts - By Bill Johnston Lucknow was host to the year-end U-13 soccer tournament held July 26-29. Seventeen local teams participated in this co-ed tourney. Blyth II Lightning had a very good showing at this tournament. On Wednesday, July 26, Blyth began the tournament against Seaforth. This was a very wet night and they were "playing in the rain". Umbrellas helped some of the parents stay dry, but the players were not so lucky. Truth be told, however, some of the players enjoyed the experience and welcomed the rain to cool them down. Michelle Studhalter and Emily Nicholson were the game captains. Greg Roetcisoender earned a shutout as goalkeeper for Blyth during the first half of the game. Laura Peach and Nick Brandon- Caldwell were able to pass the ball up the field to Brent Drost for the first goal of the night. Brendon Boven made a nice pass up the field to Drost, who chipped the ball up and over the goalie for a 2-0 lead for Blyth. Drost put on the goalie shirt to cover the net for Blyth for the second half of the game. Boven kicked the ball up the field to Roetcisoender who also kicked the ball over the Seaforth keeper's head. Seaforth became more aggressive and scored. The gaine became a little closer after Seaforth had a successful hand-ball penalty and kicked the ball into. Blyth's net. When the final whistle blew Blyth was ahead 3-2. It was an exciting win for Blyth Lightning. The Lightning played Goderich Knights of Columbus on July 27 on a much nicer and dryer evening. Lucas Frawley did - a fine job covering the net for Blyth for the first half. Blyth's first goal of the night occurred after Boven took the corner kick and the ball landed nght in front of the net. Roetcisoender headed the ball past the keeper into the back of the net. Alex Raynard made an awesome throw in, then Drost picked up the ball and travelled up the field to score his first goal of the night. Drost scored the next goal after receiving a nice pass from forward Ali Snell. Goderich scored after taking a successful penalty kick. The score was 3-1 for Blyth at halftime. Roetcisoender shut the door when covering the net for the last half of the game. The Lightning played a fantastic second half. Brandon-Caldwell made a nice pass up the field. Drost picked up the pass and booted the ball up towards the net and Emily Nicholson chipped it. Brandon-Caldwell sent the ball up the field and Boven went around Goderich defence to score his first goal of the night. Drost and Brandon-Caldwell earned the assist on the next goal, the second for Boven. Marc Dery made a nice pass to Boven for yet another goal for Blyth. Blyth's next goal of the game came when Raynard passed the ball up the field to Drost for the final goal of the night. - Blyth played an exceptionally strong game and really pulled together as a team to win this game 8-1. The Lightning played Clinton Ajax on Friday, July 28. Roetcisoender and Frawley did a great job covering the net for Blyth. Clinton came out strong and was first to score in the game. Then Clinton had a penalty shot after Blyth had a handball in the crease and scored again. Blyth had a terrific display of teamwork after Boven paSsed the ball to Drost who took a shot on the net, but hit the crossbar. Snell was playing her position well and booted the rebound into clinton's net. Clinton was able to get the ball The "Sat-Sun-Up-Before-The- Roosters" golfers at the Wingham golf course came up with some super scores last weekend. Of the 15 Saturday golfers, three had a real battle for top honours. Keith Cameron, John Dailleboust and Wayne Johnston all recorded a nine-hole score of 36, but John prevailed to take top honours with his 18-hole score of 73. Wayne and Keith were just one behind with 74s. Skins were won by Doug Neil, Don Edgar, Wayne Johnston and John Dailleboust. Sunday it was Wayne Johnston's turn to shine as he came up with a front nine of 35 and a back nine of 36 for an 18-hole score of 71. This was top honours to date for the month of July. John Dailleboust continued his fine play coming in with an 18-hole score of 73. With six birdies Wayne Johnston won eight skins with Brian Carr, Doug Neil, Don Edgar and John Dailleboust each winning two skins. I understand John Dailleboust came in so close to that elusive hole-in-one as his ball stopped just an inch or so short of the hole on number five. *** Wednesday morning Seniors Day into the net one more time before the halftime whistle blew. Blyth dug in their heels and really passed the ball around during the second half of the game. They had scoring opportunities and two penalty kicks, but were unsuccessful in scoring any more goals. The final whistle blew and Blyth had a disappointing loss of 3-1. This loss put Blyth out of the tournament, earning a second place in their pool. Blyth had two wins and a loss, but Clinton had two wins and a tie, so this made them first in their pool by one point. In this tournament only the pool winners saw 18 out to gOlf. With pars on the first two holes Aart DeVos came through to win first prize. There was a tie for second between Jim Inwood and Lloyd Lamont. The one birdie of the day was recorded by Bill Deans with a four on the par five first hole. Bill Dauphin was either very good dr very bad as he had four pars, three triple bogies and a double bogey. *** The junior golf school was a huge success with some 30 future Tigers on hand. It was interesting to watch the youngsters putting, playing out of sand traps, chipping, etc. and it was amazing to see how quick these youngsters improved their shots. Some of them are certainly very, very good after this week of instruction. On completion all received a prize and were presented with certificates. It was certainly a happy group of enthusiastic youngsters. *** Wednesday night was the once a month steak night and when there are steaks, it brings out a good turnout. Despite a slight drizzle the numbers hit a new high with no less than 45 on hand. It was a three-man scramble went on to the semi-final,games. Coach Lauren Bouman was very pleased with the effort and success her team played with during this ,year-end soccer tournament. Defensive players were Brooke Bouman, Michelle Studhalter, Laura VanSchaik, Marc Dery, Lucas Frawley, Jonathon Hakkers, Alec Lorentz and Jason Warwick. Halfback players were Katie Packer, Alex Raynard, Brooke Snell and Brendon Boven. Forward were Emily Nicholson, Laura Peach, Ali Snell, Nick Brandon-Caldwell, Brent Drost and Greg Roetcisoender (part-time goalie). competition and there were some good scores. The team of Joel Riley, Mark Hackett and Bill Dauphin were runaway winners as they recorded an eagle, six birdies and two pars to come in with a nine hole score of 27; eight under par. Well done! In second place with four under par was the trio of Doug Neil, Jim Ross and Dennis Knox. Third spot went to the threesome of Ed Daer, Roger Keay and Roger's son-in-law Jeff. Closest to the pin awards were won by Ed Daer on number seven, Mark Hackett on number seven and a tie on number four between John Kuyvenhoven and Roger Keay. Skin awards were won by the team or Riley, Hackett and Dauphin on number five and number eight with the final skin on number nine going to the Skinn boys - Garrett, Eric and Brett. *** Aug. 8 some of the ladies will be playing for the Wilma Kerr trophy.
