Program kicks off careers in healthcare
It's to ensure confidentiality. And it's
just one of the jobs that gets left
because there are other things more
urgent. Because of Em, now, we're
actually ahead of the game."
Both administrative tasks are
important learning for Cardiff the
two women say. "It's good for Em to
see the other side of the coin, the
administrative side of nursing."
"It's a really different view," said
Cardiff. "It's good to know that I'm
going to have to keep working on my
organizational skills."
Both feel the program has been a
positive experience that provided an
excellent opportunity for both
sides.

Gaining hands-on experience in a
work environment is invaluable to
students.
This summer many young people
studying in the health care field are
enjoying that opportunity through
HealthKick Huron's rural healthcare
work placement.
Among them is Emily Cardiff of
Brussels, who has been employed at
Huronlea, the county home for the
aged, since May.
"We are very pleased to have
Emily with us. She has been a
wonderful asset to our staff," said
Joanne Riehl, director of care.
Riehl said they learned about the
program through an e-mail
distributed by HealthKick and sent
in a proposal. "It was attractive to us
because it is 100 per cent funded
meaning it was a chance for us to
have a staff person we hadn't
budgetted for. They could help us get
out from under the mounds of
paperwork."
A job posting was put on the
website. Resumes were sent to
HealthKick and were sorted
geographically, then distributed.
"We had several candidates that
were all in university in the health
care field."
Cardiff, who is studying nursing at
the University of Western Ontario
said she learned about the job from a
friend. The opportunity was perfect,
she said, because the position was
convenient and it was the type of
work experience that would enhance
her résumé. "It looks good to have a
health-related job during school."
Most of the work that Cardiff has
been responsible for is computer-
related, and accounts for the
administrative aspects of nursing.
"We are moving more towards
computers and young people's skills
are better than ours.
Cardiff was no exception. "She
can complete in a matter of minutes
what it takes us much longer to do.
Emily's even taught us old dogs
some new tricks too."
Riehl explains that Cardiff's tasks
have been the archiving of files and
updating the care plans into the
computer.
A care plan, Riehl explained is a
detailed plan of care for each
resident at the home. "It's everything
we need to know about them, and
how to care for them. Basically Em
got all of those caught up."
The archives are a record kept of
each resident. "Some are obviously
here for a long time and their file
grows. Once they are no longer with
us the file is prepared and secured.

The emerald green hills of Ireland
can't be be that much more beautiful
than what we have in Huron County
right now. The many shades of green
that are growing in our community
this week in the colours of the trees,
the hay, the shrubs, the corn and the
many types of grasses would keep
any artist busy trying to duplicate
the various shades.
A drive in the country right now is
very beautiful — take the time and
really look at the different hues.
For August the growth is a
wonder, everything is so lush. The
flowerbeds in the village are at their
best with lots of show from the lilies,
the daisies, the phlox and gladioli.
Mind you the weeds are having a
good time as well.
Holidays are moving fast. Lots of
reports of great weather at cottages
at the beach as well as fun days at
water parks and of course camping.
Overnights at the grandparents are
always a good deal and an excuse to
drop the work and get at the fun. Be
sure you get your share of the
summer fun.
On Aug. 11 hum a verse or two of
Happy Birthday or better still send
Phyllis Beacom a card and a note to
her home in Whitby. Lots of candles
will be needed as Hope and Ron,
Megan and John celebrate the 90
years of Mom and Grandma. Have a
great day Phyllis with your favourite
kind of cake.
Be sure to look after yourself as
the heat continues. Drink plenty of
fluids and pay attention if you feel
whoozy or faint.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Hands-on learning
Emily Cardiff, right, is working at Huronlea for the summer
through the HealthKick Huron's rural healthcare work
placement. She, and director of care Joanne Riehl said the
program has been a positive experience on both sides.
