Londesborough woman returns from year in England
Adventure

By Carol Burns
Liz MacGregor, daughter of Don
and Kitty, Londesborough, returned
June 23 from spending a year at York
University in England.
She is currently working in
Toronto preparing for her final
undergraduate year.
"I love to travel, and one of the
things I wanted to do while at
university was to take a year
abroad." MacGregor said.
MacGregor got the travel bug from
going to Brazil on the Lions' student
exchange program, and from
meeting the students who stayed
with her family as part of the
exchange program.
In speaking about her nine months
in England, MacGregor said "It

On display at the Blyth Gallery is
close to 50 examples of her work. It
features sculptures standing a half a
metre in height, many appearing to
be in deep conversation.
For the untutored, Monostory has
a simple lesson to follow in looking
at her work. "It's the emotions in the
bigger figurative works. Look to the
posture of the body, the tilt of the
head. If there is any kind of emotion
to them, and it doesn't have to be the
one I saw when I created it. then I've
reached my goal."
exceeded my expectations. It is the
best thing I've ever done. I found
myself challenging my boundaries
and had a chance to see myself
differently."
MacGregor who is studying
language and linguistics took a
course in Middle English, covering
the period 1100 to 1400 AD.
"I was expected to do more on my
own time. We were to ready
ourselves and be prepared for
discussing the day's topics during
the class, rather than reading
material after the lecture,"
MacGregor said of the differences
about school in England.
"I worked part time at a grocery
store, and found the measurements a
bit of a challenge."
And it seems she does many times
over. "The rewards are the little
letters I receive from people who
say they bought a sleeping stone or
box, that they just love it, or that it
brings them comfort. That they put
an effort into writing a letter to let
me know the piece they've got is
important to them is wonderful for
me."
Dialogues in Clay will be at the
Bainton Gallery until Aug. 9.
Admission is free.
The Gallery is open Tuesdays to
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
"The expectations for clerks are
different there than they are here.
When I went to the pub, people
would come up to me and say 'Oh,
you're the polite one from the
grocery store.' I found it quite
interesting." said MacGregor.
At school I was known as the two-
stone turkey person because I had
cooked a meal for 35 people that
included a two-stone turkey (32
pounds). I really like cooking, and
hadn't been able to cook while at
school in Toronto," laughed
MacGregor. "In the end, my oven
wasn't big enough and we had to
carry it across campus, and bring it
back to my rooms on a cart."
One opportunity MacGregor
remembers well, was a university
sponsored hitchhiking trip to
Morocco.
The original plan had been to
travel with a friend she knew well,
but he had to drop out, and she ended
up hitchhiking across Europe with a
stranger.
"I told my parents after I had
signed up. I am sure that they were
concerned about their daughter

"I speak French fluently, and was
relying on that skill to get me
through. At one point I found
myself trying to get us on a bus that
was 45 minutes late. If we didn't get
on, I would have just wasted the
$400 I had spent on flights."
MacGregor continued.
"Another experience that was very
growing was going to a traditional
bath house, and while sitting in my
underwear, having a strange woman
ask me to wash her back. It
challenged my comfort zones."
MacGregor said that during the
trip she found new things out about
herself, some she liked, some that
surprised her. She is working on
changing some parts of herself.
She wants to return to London.
"I would love to go back for my
Master's or PhD, but I think I
will probably finish them in
Canada and then try to get work in
England." "My parents are
very supportive and know that
