Bantams fall 8-5 to Elma
Dodge ball
It's not always the easiest way to get on base, and this
Belgrave player does his best to keep from getting hit by a
wild pitch during a contest in Blyth on July 20. It was the two
Squirt teams playing and Belgrave won by a score of 8-4.

Londesborough Mites
fall short in game
against Seaforth
The Londesborough Mites took on
Seaforth July 13 away and came up
short in a 17-12 effort.
Helping out defensively were
Chandler Wilts, who caught a pop
fly for an out, Jason Salverda with
five outs at first and Emily Bergsma
whose throw to second thwarted one
runner's plans.
Offensive help came from Kyle
Pollard who hit two homers and
scored three runs on each and Tyler
Berry who also stroked a home run.
Four nights later, the team faced a
tough loss against Winthrop at
home.
Pollard hit a triple to score Valerie
Westerhout, which turned out to be
Londesborough's only run.
Winthrop had 28 runners cross the
plate, but there were still some great
defensive moments from the home
squad. Berry got an out at first, and
Wilts stopped a runner in his tracks
at second. A pop fly, caught by
Patrick Bergsma counted for another
out, while Salverda again had five
outs at first base.
Brussels U-8s
tie Elma
The Brussels U-8 played well in a
contest against Elma. The game
finished in a 1-1 tie.
Delayna Smith scored the only
goal assisted by Connor Bridge.
Sophie Cardiff and Teagan McGavin
had some chances to score.
Derrick Waechter and Jake
Mitchell played well in net.
The Brussels Bantams played
home to Elma Logan on Wednesday,
July 19.
Ryan Smith started on the mound
giving up one run on a double, single
and two walks. Justin Pipe was the
only Brussels offence to hit and
safely get on base. He would reach
and remain at second.
Smith started off quickly in the
second racking up two strikeouts.
The Brussels defence fell apart
giving up four runs on a triple and
three errors.
Brussels dug in at the bottom of
the second. Tyler Deitner started
with a single. Cody Subject singled
It's been a busy month of baseball
for the Londesborough PeeWees.
July 6 the team shared a hit parade
with Benmiller at home and finished
the game in a 14-14 tie.
Benmiller got off to a slow start
scoring just two runs in the top half
of the inning.
Londesborough, on the other hand
came out strong, led offensively by
Cory Buchanan, whose grand slam
homer counted for more than half of
the six runs scored.
The pattern continued through the
second with the home side shutting
down their visitors then adding three
to the tally. Dan Dery posted a two-
run homer.
The wheels started to fall off for
the home side in the third and fourth
innings, however as Benmiller took
the lead, scoring 12 in two innings.
Londesborough was only able to get
runners across the plate. -
Clinton was host to a U-11 co-ed
soccer tournament held July 18-22.
Blyth Thunder played with a lot of
heart and determination, and put
forth a terrific effort during this year-
end tournament.
The game was played against
Goderich Zellers on July 18 at the
Christian school field. Danielle
Randell did a great job as Blyth's
goalkeeper and covered the net for
the first three games of the
tournament.
Goderich came out strong and
scored two goals during the first
half.
The Thunder decided to get in the
game and played a really strong
second half, obtaining ball control
and making better passes. Blyth's
forward Jean Paul VanDorp was able
to get the ball away from Goderich,
then maneuvered the ball around
several of his opponents to get a goal
and put Blyth on the scoreboard.
Kathryn Peach was able to score a
goal to tie up the game. Peach was
able to score this most welcomed
goal after receiving a pass from her
teammates; twins J. P. and Leendert
VanDorp.
The Thunder's defensive and half-
back players worked very hard to
keep their opponents from scoring
another goal. Both teams had
scoring opportunities, but the game
ended in a 2-2 tie giving both the
Blyth and Goderich team two points
each.
The second game was played
against Clinton Arsenal on July 20,
once again on the Christian school
field. Clinton was first to get on the
to advance Deitner. Evan Ducharme
loaded the bases with a walk.
Runners scored on a single by
McLeod. Pipe scored another on a
hit pitch. Brad Quesenberry took a
walk, followed by a double by
Brianne Wheeler. Brussels scored
five to tie the game.
Elma scored two in the third on
one hit, one walk and three errors.
Ducharme was the only Brussels
offence to see the bases in the third.
Subject and Smith struck out and
Ducharme was put out trying to steal
third.
Wheeler took over pitching duties,
allowing no runs on one hit and one
A better fifth inning, pulled the
teams to a tie. After shutting down
their opponents, the Londesborough
squad had three runners come in to
even the score.
Pitching duties for the team were
shared by Buchanan who had one
strikeout and Dustin Court with two.
On July 10, Buchanan and Court
again took turn on the mound for a
game against Stanley at home.
The locals came up short in this
13-10 effort. Things looked good
initially with Stanley being held to
one and Londesborough scoring
four.
However, the visitors had a strong
second inning, bringing five runners
in, then shut down the home side to
take a two-point lead.
The game stayed clbsethrough the
third, fifth and sixth with
"Londesborough coming within one.
Then Stanley picked up three and
score sheet and scored the lone goal
of the first period.
Blyth tied up the game in the
second half, after L. VanDorp and
Christina Eckert passed the ball up
the field to forward J P VanDorp
who booted the ball into Clinton's
net.
Clinton scored again, but Blyth
never gave up and in the last minute
strikeout in the fourth.
Brussels went down one, two,
three with strikeouts to Prior,
Pipe and Quesenberry to end the
inning.
Elma added another run in the
final inning on a walk and a single.
Brussels had one last chance to
catch up. Wheeler struck out.
Deitner was sent to first after being
hit with a pitch. Subject was patient
at the plate and waited the walk.
Runners would remain in place as
Ducharme and Smith went down
swinging.
The final score was Elma Logan 8,
Brussels. 5.
allowed just one to finish the game
with a victory.
Buchanan struck out two, and
Court one.
July 12, the team travelled to
Brussels and again ended the contest
tied 14-14.
The hosts played two strong first
innings taking a commanding nine-
point lead into the third. But the
Londesborough boys were not to be
outdone and fought back to gain the
tie.
Solid on the mound again were
Court with two strikeouts and
Buchanan with one.
July 18 it was a home game
against Kirkton, and a victory.
Buchanan had a strong game,
striking out three and stroking a
homer in the fifth. Court also shared
pitching duties.
The game ended in a score of 16-
11 for Londesborough.
of the game L. VanDorp passed the
ball up the field to his brother who
put the ball into the Clinton net to tie
the game. With a final score of 2-2,
each team ended up with two points.
It was another 6 p.m. game, on
July 21 at the Christian school field
for the Thunder's third match of the
tournament.
