THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2006. PAGE 7.
News around Walton has
not been of the good news
variety this week.
Two residents of Moncrieff
Road suffered serious injuries
in two accidents. Jim Blake is
in London hospital after being
struck by a falling square bale
of hay. Family members were
there and came to his aid
immediately and the Blyth
Fire Department and
ambulance were on the scene
very quickly.
The air ambulance was
brought in and Jim was
whisked off to London.
Information at this point on
Jim's condition is that he
suffered several broken
bones, crushed vertebrae,
lacerations and was waiting
for surgery.
As medical terms go, he is
in stable condition and I'm
sure the thoughts and prayers
of the community are with
Evelyn and family.
A second accident this
week has caused serious
injury to Mitch Blake and
friend Tara McDonald of
Wingham. They were
involved in a collision with
another vehicle in the early
morning hours.
Mitch is in a Hamilton
hospital with head and leg
injuries and Miss McDonald
is in a London hospital with
serious injuries also.
The thoughts and prayers of
the community go out to
Bruce and Michelle Blake
and family and to the
McDonald family in
Wingham.
It was a week for travelling
last week. A short trip was
taken by the Walton Women's
Institute as they travelled to
the Bruce Nuclear Visitors
Centre.
The focus of the meeting
was on energy and
arrangements were made by
Marion Godkin. The ladies
carpooled to the plant and
along with the eight members,
Bill Humphries, Lavern
Godkin and Cathrine
Campbell enjoyed the film
and presentation.
The group then travelled to
the home of Rick and
Margaret Mclnroy at
Inverhuron to enjoy a cold
plate supper.
Brian McGavin spent the
week in B.C. attending
meetings. At the conclusion
of his business, he was able to
meet with Neil McDonald to
enjoy dinner together before
catching his flight home.
Maxine Marks has returned
from a trip to Calgary and a
visit with her son Brian and
Linda. They were at the
stampede parade to see the
Seaforth and District
Marching Girls Band as well
as attending at Spruce
Meadows where the band also
performed.
Local girls in the band
included Krista Shorteed,
Nicole Lowe, Amy Douma,
Kylie Deitner and Kayla
Bishop.
Maxine saw the horse
jumping competition and the
Royal Canadian Mounted
Police Musical Ride at Spruce
Meadows. Maxine was at the
Stampede three times. The
first time there Brian and
Maxine toured the grounds
and different areas and
venues. The second time,
Maxine went with Linda's
parents Dave and Jan for
Seniors day and the many
programs. Maxine attended
on Sunday, the finalist day.
In the afternoon, the rodeo
finals of calf roping, bull
riding, bronco riding and
barrel racing finals were held
with the first prize winners
getting $100,000 in each
division.
The evening started out
with the chuck wagon races
and the final show was
spectacular as were the
fireworks.
Fireworks went off every
night and Maxine reports
seeing them quite clearly
from Brian and Linda's home.
Blue jeans and cowboy hats
were the popular mode • of
dress for all.
Maxine also went to
Kimberly to attend the
International Old Tyme
Accordion championships.
Kimberly is a version of a
little German town with
cuckoo clocks everywhere
and German singing
timepieces.
A concert was held in the
area with an Accordion band
from Toronto consisting of
100 men and women in
uniform. They travelled to
Kimberly by the prairie
through Okotoks, High River,
Fort MacCloud, Pincher
Creek, Crow's Nest Pass and
through a lot of cattle
ranching area.
Coming home from
Kimberly via the mountain
route they visited the areas of
Shookusmachurk, Fairmount
Hot Springs, Windemere
Radium Hot Springs,
Canmore, Kananaskis,
Cochrane and saw both deer
and bear enroute.
Maxine had a good visit
with two Walton
acquaintances. She had time
with Kendra Warwick, who is
Leona McDonald's
granddaughter and with Carl
Coutts, who has Walton roots.
Congratulations to Brent
and Susan Robinson on the
birth of son Noah.
Get-well wishes go out to
Cassandra Banks. She
underwent a serious six-hour
back .surgery last week.
Reports are that they have her
up and walking some and we
hope she will return home
real soon.
It was a busy weekend for
many Walton residents as
there were three buck and
does for area young people. In
Listowel at the Kin Station
there were many neighbours
and friends in attendance fora
get-together for Bob Steiss
and Ang Sills.
Their upcoming nuptials
are in August. Bob is the son
of Stewart and Madeline
Steiss.
In Blyth a large crowd
gathered for the buck and doe
for Colleen' McCallum and
Scott Bromley. Their wedding
will be held in August as well.
Colleen is the daughter of
Paul and Dianne McCallum.
The third party was for
Stacy Linton and Joe
Courtney held in Ripley.
There was a great crowd at its
and their upcoming wedding
is planned for September.
Stacy is the daughter of Dave
and Brenda Linton.
Congratulations to all of the
couples on their upcoming
weddings.
The farmers who have
wheat and hay are hard at it
this past week. Crop advisor
Ken reports that the wheat is
running really well and that
second cut hay is good
quality.
Returning from a vacation
near Parry Sound are Carman
and Mary Bernard, Val and
Bradley Shortreed and Wendy
Boyd. They enjoyed their stay
at the Johnson cottage that
they bid for at the Walton
Little School Auction. It was
a great time and great
weather.
The family of Catharine
Baan and the late Martin
Baan gathered at the home of
Don and Monique Baan for a
family reunion on Sunday.
There were 43 family
members out of just over 50
who were able to attend.
Family travelled from
Toronto, New Hamburg,
Sprague and many places in
between to enjoy a beautiful
day and potluck meal in
Monique's beautiful yard.
The Baan family includes
Jerry and Doreen, John and
Mary, Dave and Dianne and
Nellie and Howard Booker.
Many of their families
attended.
Taking part in a most
-amazing event this weekend
was a former Walton girl — Pat
McDonald Parr and her
daughter Andrea. They were
among 1,070 bicyclists who
biked from Grand Bend to
London and back in the
second largest bikeathon to
raise money for Multiple
Sclerosis.
There were participants
from all over Ontario ranging
from the youngest rider of 12
to the oldest rider of 74. The
group raised over $600,000
for MS.
It was something to see the
riders arriving in Grand Bend
through the spectator-lined
streets, cheering and clapping
for the athletes.
The fastest rider did the
journey in one-and-a-half
hours and Pat and Andrea
accomplished the ride in five-
. and-a-half hours.
Congratulations to these
ladies for a job well done.
Pat is the daughter of
Marilyn McDonald.

Grandpa Hackwell is young
master Sebastian. Of course
he's keeping grandpa young
and enjoys visiting Uncle
Elliott at the farm.
I was approached by a
young lady on the weekend
who told me how much she
enjoys my column. Words of
encouragement are always
appreciated as are the calls
from people with stories of
what's going on in their lives
and our community's life.
Thanks to everyone for
letting me know what's going
