Youth exchangeparticipants visit Shaw camp
A group of visitors to
Canada recently had a change
to gather together at camp.
Huron County Lions
exchange program youths and
their host families attended
the Charlie Shaw
International Youth Exchange
Camp from July 18-24.
Shaw, a resident of Blyth,
was approached in 1974, by
then Lion governor Jim
Pemberton about being youth
exchange chairman. "There
had never been a youth
exchange in this area, so we
had to start from nothing,"
said Shaw.
In only a few years, youths
were travelling to District A-9
from around the world,
spending a week at camps in
St. Marys, then later at Pike
Lake or Scone.
The camp was eventually
named in honour of Shaw,
who was special guest at this
year's opening ceremonies.
District Lions clubs hosts
various events throughout the
week.
Some of these took them
further afield to such places
as the Battlefield Museum in
Stoney Creek, the Oakville
Lions Foundation of Canada
Dog Guide_ Training School,
and Niagara Falls.
They also saw local points
of interest, including a tour of
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex.

Congratulations to two
young athletes from the
Brussels area who represented
the Brussels Legion at the
Legion provincial track and
field event held in Timmins on
July 14, 15 and 16.
Ami Schimanski and Darby
Alcorn are members of the
Wingham Track and Field
Club and of the F.E. Madill
track teams. They participated
in discus and shotput events.
The girls boarded the bus,
already loaded with athletes
from Kitchener and-Guelph
track clubs, along with other
area athletes in Wingham on
Thursday morning. One last
stop in Port Elgin for more
kids and it was off to North
Bay Best Western for the
night. Meeting new friends,
playing cards and eating 'and
swimming put in the evening
for them. Friday morning,
they continued their journey to
Timmins and arrived.
Ami placed fifth with a
throw of 9.44 m.. and Darby
placed ninth overall in the
competition. The girls enjoyed
a pizza party hosted by
coaches. Gary and Maureen
Lisle, Carol Phillips, Sandy
McIntyre from Madill and
Janice Eckinswiller, Bruce
Glebe and Dianne Crossley
along with the other area
athletes.
Saturday was the discus
competition. Darby threw a Pb
(personai best) of 30.82
metres and placed eighth.
Following the competition,
it was time to board the bus
and head towards home. They
stopped again in North Bay
for the night and enjoyed a
mandatory meeting which
turned out to be an ice-cream
cake party. Eating, cards,
partying etc. made for a late
great night for them all. After
breakfast they boarded the bus
in the morning to finish the
journey home. The girls report
making lots of new friends
and have great memories of
their experience.
The Brussels Legion was
proud to be able to help
sponsor these two young
ladies in their quest and to
support them with some
additional provincial aid.
The Brussels . Legion
. executive met for its July
meeting on Tuesday evening.
There were eight members
present to discuss the business
of the Branch. The treasurer,
appointed in May, submitted
her resignation and executive
member Nicole Lowe has
agreed to take the position of
treasurer.

fish fries in Mitchell and for
Grey Twp.'s anniversary, were
received.
The crew has been busy
with four fish fries in 18 days.
There has been a small break
for a couple of weeks, then it's
back to work with the Seaforth
fish fry and the Tigers fastball
tournament.
A-report was received on the
initial plans for the 75th
anniversary party for the
Branch. Look for more info in
the fall.

tickets .are here and members
are encouraged to drop in and
pick up a book to sell or to get
their tickets.
