Future of Brussels hotel uncertain FROM BRUSSELS . Just in case you had forgotten and thought you ruled the world, Mother Nature thought a different thought and sent forth a reminder. The power of the wind and the speed of the rain were very well shown in several spots in our community. Each person had their own July 17 story to tell and each one is told with awe and wonder. Trees and branches tossed, articles found in strange places or not at all and the arrival of water in varying amounts. It was a time to just wonder. The Gowing/Wheeler crew should be back in Ontario. Sister Nancy and Bruce Corrigan who live in Great Village, Nova Scotia had invited mother Betty Gowing and all the descendants to their adopted province to celebrate Becky's wedding. Rosemary and Dave picked up older sister Thelma from Kemptville to join the western Ontario entourage to let Nova Scotia folks that the Gowing clan know how to celebrate. I'm sure they will have good stories to tell. This is Kid's Corner week. If you have a free afternoon, stop by and join the fun with loads of enthusiastic kids laughing, learning and singing. Each afternoon is special so take the grandchildren, even if Thursday is your first day this year. It's a good way to spend an afternoon. - Hello Betty Shaw. We're thinking about you. Last week, fencing went up at the back of the old Brussels Country. Inn, which has sat vacant for a number of years. According to Huron East's chief building official Paul Josling, the plan of the new owner is to gut the interior. After that it's anyone's guess, as, he said, the building is no longer safe to enter. Josling first discovered there was a problem awhile ago, when an individual was interested in purchasing it, so he went in to have a look. "The inside is unbelievable," said are treating you well and the mysteries of the human body are revealed. We're keeping a close eye on Harvey and that's a tough job to do. The wonders of our world are everywhere. My favourites for this month are the field of sunflowers on the west end of Ethel; the commuter parking sign at the restaurant on 86 at Morrisbank and the fields of flax east of Conn. This is one wonderful world. Enjoy the rest of the month. Bye now, Betty G.W. Josling. The whole interior is black with mold. It's not safe." The CBO said the ceiling tile in the old bar room is entirely black and the appliances in the kitchen were barely recognizable. "You really couldn't tell what they were. They are just crawling with mold." Molds are microscopic organisins that are found virtually everywhere and which have been around forever, but it in the past few years it has been connected to health problems. Certain respiratory problems have been linked specifically to indoor mold. It is when the spores become airborne that there is the potential for health risk. For some people it can only take a few mold spores to become ill. Therefore exposure to large amounts, such as those in the once thriving hotel is considered unhealthy. With the plan for now being to gut the interior, Josling said they will have to wait until it's complete to see how extensive the damage is. "We will have to assess it then. At this point, I don't know if they can even ;salvage the building." Josling said that while the work is being done, there should be no danger to anyone passing nearby. "But I wouldn't be around there when they're dumping the stuff into the bins outside." Once one of five hotels in the village, the old American Hotel, as it was known in the 1800s, survived much longer than its counterparts. Though it sat empty for a time the hotel was brought back to life again in the late 1980s, then under new ownership in 1992 underwent extensive remodelling. It has, however, been closed for the past several years.
