Citizen staff Not all parts of working in the theatre are glamorous. Jennifer Triemstra says a critical responsibility as wardrobe mistress/designer is laundry. "You can lose all the costumes in 24 hours if someone does the laundry wrong," she explains. This Thursday, July 20, the North Huron Museum is hosting a Russian Tea Party to celebrate its new exhibit, VoiceS of Russia. The new exhibit features 28 paintings by modem Russian artists. The styles range from graceful realism to joyous modern works. The paintings are courtesy of Galerie Russe and will be on display until Sept. 4. The tea on Thursday has two sittings, one from 3 - 5 p.m. and one from 7 - 9 p.m. The price of admission is $5 per person and includes tea or a cold drink, over 10 desserts to sample, an interesting talk by Ron Hiller, owner of Galerie Russe and a chance to tour the painting exhibit and the museum. Hat and gloves are not required but encouraged. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the museum at 519-357- 1096. The bible is the notebook that has all the information about the production carefully itemized and categorized, and contains every detail about costumes, from initial sketches and historical information, to hairstyle and underwear. It is updated every day. This is Triemstra's fifth season at the Blyth Festival. When not at Blyth, she teaches costume at Ryerson and York Universities, and designs costumes for the Canadian Children Dance Theatre in Toronto. She is also co-artistic director of Quibble Company, where she is workshopping a play called Kitchen Radio. Even after more than 100 shows, Triemstra is enthusiastic about the theatre. "I could never go back to working 9 to 5," she says. "I enjoy what I am doing so much. I don't know when work starts or stops." "If I had to leave the theatre, I would cook, " Triemstra states. "When I am cooking, I do not think of anything else. It is the only thing that makes me stop thinking abut the theatre." In addition to designing costumes, Triemstra designs sets, although she chooses carefully the sets she designs. Her favourite set designs include Blyth's Test Drive in which three actors play more than 22 characters, and The Tempest, which was her first You are invited to help Margaret Bennett celebrate her 80th birthday at an Open House at the home of her daughter Nanci and Greg Ducharme 10 Frederick Street, Brussels on Sunday, July 30th from 1-4 pm - Best wishes only! large-scale Shakespearean play. "It was just beautiful. There was just something about (The) Tempest that gave me the shivers," Triemstra marvels. The most exciting day for Triemstra is the first dress rehearsal. "That is the day you know how the costumes are working. It is very intense, because it is the first time you get to see all the actors together on set in their costumes, Triemstra explains. Costume design is complex. Triemstra says the first step is to read the script to find out the direction of the play. Then it is time to do research on the historical period, and talk with the director on the approach being taken — will the play be historically correct or a fantasy; what atmosphere is the director trying to create; what are the ages of the characters. Once these basic questions are answered, it is necessary to go through the script character by character, scene by scene and detail the weather, activities, time of day. Transforming the designs into reality is the next step. Costumes are either bought, rented, or made on site. "Budget limitations force us to be creative. We will start by going through the stock that the company already has and see what can be modified or redesigned to fit the current production," Triemstra shares. *.T • . • ..":•'‘...`..`W JO" •-"` Puck & Doe Kevin White & Elizabeth Burchill Saturday, July 29 from 9-1 Brussels Community Centre Age of majority Lunch provided Music by DJ Tickets $5. in advance $6. at the door • For tickets phone • or Brian 519-887-9195 Cheryl 519-335-4348 I 11 Ian She can't be that old!!! Once we have obtained something we will work to make it look old, because most people do not go around wearing new clothing all the time."
