Blyth area with a large extended
family.
"Neighbours Robert and Emily
Newcombe taught me that even a
little girl should have opinions about
what is going on.... They told me to
be sure to think and never be afraid
to express my opinions," said
Janis.
"One of the strengths of our
marriage is that we can each have
our own beliefs and ideas," Brock
said. "We can disagree without it

us."

Tribute held for Thompson

As befits a couple that has thrived
in 50 years of marriage, Janis and
Brock Vodden are strong supporters
of commitment in marriage.
These researchers, creators and
guides for the Blyth tours, celebrated
their 50th wedding- anniversary on
July 3. On July 9, a reception was
held for them at the Blyth Inn.
Typically, they included the
celebration of the Inn's 100th year in
their celebrations.
Both Voddens credit their
beginnings in Blyth for giving them

Following the luncheon, Members
of the Festival joined Coates in the
gallery for Tea with the AD.
Saturday night's performance of
Sean Dixon's Lost Heir was followed
with a tribute to Paul Thompson.
At the tribute, Thompson said "No
matter where I've travelled, or worked
in theatre it's always an incredible
experience to work.at Blyth."
"The audience is most responsive to
seeing themselves on stage - through
stories of immense depth of character,
of those deeply rooted in our
communities, and of those who have a
strong connection to our land."

and they began their married life
spending the summer in a mission
church. By fall, however, Brock had
come to realize that the ministry was
not for him. He withdrew from
theology and registered for teachers'
college. This move took the family
into the bush country near Thunder
Bay, where Brock began as a
curriculum developer for Native
Affairs.
Janis, in addition to being a
mother, ran 'Old Macdonald's farm.'
The lessons from her Grani:Ima
Morritt, who despite being deaf,
blind and lame, taught Janis to love
stories and love reading, were
critical as Janis learned to adapt to
life with no phone, no hydro, and
initially, no water or income.
The couple laughed together as
they remembered some of the
frustrations and challenges of that
time.
"We both got a sense of humour
from our families," said Janis, "that
has been a great strength in our
lives."
Brock's career evolved into
college teaching, and then into
consulting, and the family moved to
the Toronto area.
"The bush and Toronto are
similar." said Brock. "In each place
you are learning new things all the
time, and you have a tremendous
freedom to be yourself and to say
what you want."
While in Toronto, Janis
volunteered at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital for several years. She
received an award for the work she
did there, and today is still in contact
with some of the patients' families.
"Janis is able to communicate with
people who seem totally isolated,"
said Brock.
"I just begin with the premise that
everyone is someone of value and
important, " said Janis.

In 1996, the Voddens returned to
the Blyth area. For a time, Brock did
consulting work, but in 2002, illness
intervened.
Today, he does some work with
the township.
Janis teaches tai chi two days a
week.
Together the couple work on
compiling a detailed history of the
Blyth area and finding ways to give
back the gifts they have received.
"I was taught as a child that you
might not be the best, but what
matters is if you do your best."
Brock said.
"Over 50 years people change.
We have been able to adjust with the
changes. I began as a ministerial
student and ended up rejecting
religion altogether. Janis has been
able to cope with my changes."
Brock concluded.
"My heart still skips a beat when I
see Brock coming," said Janice.
