In memory
Almost 50 Campvention members attended a July 9 memorial service at Blyth's Memory
Garden. Thelma Johnston of the Greenway Trail committee, Peter Kennett and Bev Elliott,
Memory Garden chair hold the plaque presented to the Memory Garden in memory of
Kennett's wife, Patrica who died just before the advance Campvention meeting in May. Next
to Elliott is Elsie Grant, Campvention religion convener. Some of the money raised at that
meeting's church service was donated to the Memory Garden for a tree and a leaf on the
ornamental tree at the garden. The rest of the money is being donated to the Greenway Trail
for improvements. A bench is also being presented to the garden in Patrica Kennett's
memory. (Photo submitted)

For the fourth year, 14-year old
Nantasha Andala, has travelled from
Belaruse to Clinton Ontario to stay
with Gretta and Don Greidanus.
Long term, Andala would like her
family to move to Canada.
"I want to move to Toronto. I like
a big city. Gomel is bigger than
Clinton but smaller than Toronto."
When the Greidanuses retired
from farming in the Londesborough
area, they began filling their empty
house with CAS children as
weekend relief and emergency
parents.
When they heard about the
program to bring Chernobyl
children to Ontario for six weeks
each year, they applied. This is
something they want to continue as
long as their health permits.
"Every year we get new people
participating. As we have more
people willing to bring the children
into their homes, we can bring more
children here for part of the
summer."
The Greidanuses work on the
organizing committee and are active
in raising the $27,000 it costs to
bring 18 children and their
interpreter to Canada.
"Our church, the Christian
Reformed Church in Blyth has a
fundraiser once a year to help these
children," said Don Greidanus.
"And every year Canada
Wonderland opens the park to the
children. Everything is free. All we
have to take is the lunch."
The week after the children arrive,
there is a big get-together in Zurich.
There the children get a chance to
reconnect with the friends they made
on the 13-hour plane trip, and to
speak their own language.
Local dentists donate dental care
for the children.
Andala and the Greidanuses use
sign language and a Russian-English
picture dictionary when language
skills become problematic.
"We don't need to use it very often
now," says Gretta, "But the first year
it was used all the time."
Andala lives in the area of Gomel
with her parents and sister. It is four
hours on a bus to Minsk to catch the
plane to Toronto, then four more
hours to Clinton. This year she has
a friend in Bayfield and one in
Hensall. They phone each other
regularly and get to see each other
weekly.
There are weekly phone calls
home, as well, to keep in touch with
Mom and Dad. And when she
returns home, the Greidanuses
maintain the relationship
At home, Andala says that six
days a week she leaves for school at
7 a.m. returning home at 4 p.m. She
does about two hours of homework a
day. Her courses include crafts and
embroidery, along with Russian,
Bylorussian, sports, mathematics,
Biology and English.
Andala enjoys shopping for
presents to take home for her family.
This year the baggage limit has been
reduced from 70 kg. to 40 kg., which
will restrict how much she can take
home.
"Last year Dad met me in Minsk,"
said Andala, "It was very cool."
"I hope Mom and Dad will meet
me in Minsk this year."
