Goderich III shutouts
Blyth U-13 Lightning
The U-11 Lightning and their
coach Bert Sjaarda were keen
playing their last game of the regular
season as they took on the Goderich
Zellers. Captains were Wyatt Carey
and Morgan Bos.
The game began with Alex Peters
in net. Blyth pulled ahead within the
first five minutes of the game with
Bos passing to Derek deBoer who
popped it in.
Lightning's defence had a
workout but within the next 10
minutes, Goderich came back to tie
the game.
The Lightning's Jeff Hallahan
almost came back to put Blyth in the
lead with a goal but it was a great
save by Goderich.
Right before the half-time whistle,
Goderich had their chance, kicked it
against the goal post and bounced it
The Brussels PeeWees hosted
Seaforth on July 5.
Brendon Stretton started on the
hill pitching a terrific game to strike
out seven Seaforth batters and only
walking three. Brendon was also two
for three at the plate.
Katee Richmond had a long
homerun in the fourth inning to put
in. The whistle blew with Goderich
-ahead 2-1.
The second half began with Wyatt
Bearss in net. Very quickly, Blyth's
Bos flipped the ball to Carey who
knocked it in. Again, Blyth got
control of the ball when Madison
Sjaarda passed it to Carey who
hoofed it in.
Goderich wasn't through with
Blyth yet. The squad got control of
the ball and the Lightning's defence
had their work cut out for them.
After many great saves by Bearss,
Goderich snuck one past him to tie
the game. With only minutes left
Goderich took control and pulled
ahead with the last goal of the game.
The final score was 4-3 for
Goderich.
The Lightning began playoffs on
July 18 at CHSS.

Blyth U-13 Lightning had its final
game of the season against Goderich
III on July 13.
A very warm and humid night set
the scene for this game played at
Sparling's Field.
Lightning's game captains for the
night were halfback Brooke Snell
and centre defence Alec Lorentz.
Blyth's starting goalie was Lucas
Frawley, who made a solid effort at
covering the net for Blyth.
It was certainly a busy week at
the Wingham Golf Club both on
the course and in the clubhouse.

Monday was busy with many of
the girls playing nine holes prior to
the free golf clinics in the late
afternoon. Dave Meriam from
Goderich sure had his work cut out
for him as over 30 ladies were
there for the clinic. Many topped
the day off with a get-together over
dinner.
***
The ladies' match play is now
down to eight competitors. In the
next round matches are as follows:
Sylvia Pewtress versus Fern Wylie,
Judy Cullen versus Alicia Appleby,
Steph Jacques versus Peg Cameron
and Linda Walker versus Pauline
Pegg.

It was ideal weather Tuesday for
the Bull 94.5 FM golf day. And
what a turnout! Every tee-off time
from early morning until after 7
p.m. was booked as golfers, young
and old from near and afar, took
advantage of the special rate of
$9.45 for an enjoyable day of golf
at Wingham promoted by the local
radio station.

Both teams played an aggressive
game, but Goderich had a stronger
starting half and scored two
goals before the half-time whistle
blew.
Greg Roetcisoender put on the
goalie gear for the second half of the
game. In spite of the fact that Blyth
was down to two subs on such a hot
night, the team played an
outstanding second half.
Blyth outshot Goderich, but they
A well-needed rain arrived early
Wednesday until noon and
cancelled the seniors' golf day.
But the weather co-operated and
the Atwood invitational, although
delayed from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30
p.m. went ahead and was a huge
success.

Twenty-four were out for
Wednesday men's night. Jason
LeRoux, with birdies on the first
and fifth holes, came in with a 35
for low gross in the A division
while Mark Foxton captured low
gross in the B flight with a 38. Low
nets were A flight won by Dan
Campbell and Trevor Hopf, with B
flight winners Bill Dauphin and
Eric Skinn. Closest to the pin
awards went to Dan Campbell on
number two and Bill Deans on
number nine.
***
Buff's Thursday night crew saw
some changes on the leader board
with Doug Neil's 39, the low score
for the night. Mark Foxton picked
up five skins with a birdie on three
and Al Godfrey won four skins
with a par on seven. Closest to the
pin award was won by Bill
Dauphin.

couldn't get the ball past the visitors'
very keen goalie. Roetcisoender
came out to challenge the ball, but
lost control of the ball and Goderich
was able to get one goal.
The final score was a 3-0 victory
for Goderich.
Blyth has no game on July 20, but
the coach has called a practice for
6:30 p.m. to prepare the team for the
Lucknow year-end tournament that
runs the following week.
A junior golf camp will be held
July 24 - July 28 daily from 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Goderich's Dave Merian
will be chief instructor with
assistance from locals Ed Daer,
Mark Hackett and Joel Riley.
Cost for the week is $50 which
covers daily golf instruction, pop
and lunch. Last year's camp was a
huge success and the improvement
of the participants was remarkable.
Camp is open to all youths in the
area.

Ed Daer won the Bluewater
seniors golf tourney shooting a 76
and Bill Robinson won the low net
in his flight.
Maxine Robinson was mighty
proud of her birdie on number nine
at the Bluewater ladies tourney.
Greg Storey saw an eagle at the
Seaforth club, not the flying kind
bur rather a golf eagle as playing
partner Brian Carr holed his
second shot on the par four first
hole for an eagle two.
The lightning storm on Sunday,
July 9 struck the basswood near
number one green — splitting and
peeling the bark off the tree.
Despite extremely hot weather the
yard crew had the mess cleaned up
pronto.
