THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 6, 2006 Low-maintenance a priority Continued from A-7 with brown-eyed susies and lilies. Turtleheads, iris, meadow sweet, coreopis, many varieties fill beds in rough and tumble relationships. These are not pampered plants, but they are loved and well cared for. Towards the back of the garden are the herb and vegetable beds. This year most of the vegetable garden has been taken over by flowers for a family wedding. Shade areas are filled with hosta, bleeding hearts, periwinnkle and goats' beard. Battye says that she does not use chemical sprays or fertilizer on her yard. She has no complaints about sharing some of her flowers with the rabbits that nibble here and there. Everything is lush The front garden is more restrained. Many of the plants from the back have been relocated to the front beds to provide an ever- changing palette of colour. 185 KING ST. The final garden is that of Anne and Rick Elliott. This is another century home surrounded by mature trees. Anne says one of their requirements is that the gardens be low maintenance. Day lilies and fern border the front drive, and an attractive arrangement of deciduous and evergreen shrubs protect the large white-trimmed verandah. Sheltered by a low boxwood hedge, two attractive chairs wait in the sideyard for someone to come and relax in the cool shade. Her favourite part of the yard is the pool that fills one's senses in the back yard. Waterlilies and iris offer vibrant statements of colour. Other water plants bloom later in the season. The pool is surrounded by perennial beds, with the attractive garage as a backdrop. Surrounding the deck, and along the west border of the property are more shrub and perennial beds. Mature trees create ever-changing light conditions requiring seasonal modifications to the gardens. A tall, multi-stemmed stump stands at the back of the property awaiting just the right adornment.
