CRCs to sponsor Ethiopian refugee family
By Carol Burns
Citizen staff
Living conditions in an Ethiopian
refuge camp have added meaning for
some local people.
The congregation of Blyth
Christian Reformed. Church is
joining with three nearby CRC
congregations to sponsor the
immigration of a refugee woman,
Martha Reuy, and her 10 children.
Reuy is a Christian who was
forced to flee Sudan with, her
husband and two children,because of
persecution in 1983. Since that time,
the family's home has been a tent in
a crowded Ethiopian refugee camp.
Eight children were born in the
refugee camp.
On Saturday July 22,
Londesborough Fellowship Bible
Chapel will host the Cheryl Dunn
concert. The concert begins at 6:30
p.m. The chapel is at 220 King St.
Dunn began singing publicly at
eight, and by 12 was singing in bars
and clubs. Disillusioned with that
lifestyle, she quit at 15.
Today, she sings differently. She
sings Chnstian country music.
"Through my music I desire to
touch people with salvation, peace
and joy," Dunn states on her web
Her husband died in 2003, leaving
Reuy alone to care for her children
currently ranging from 10 to 27.
Jack Nonkes, a deacon at the CRC
when the immigration application
process began, said that although the
churches had covenanted to provide
all of the financial resources the
family needs for one year, the family
would not be living in Huron
County.
In the past the congregation has
sponsored refugees who have moved
to Huron County, but they find it.
very isolating here with few African
communities.
"There is a problem bringing
people into a rural area. Once they
begin to get established, they find a
way to integrate with their
communities," Nonkes said.
page.
In 2002, after changing careers,
marrying and experiencing life
while having four children, she
released her first CD, Anybody Else,
which won county/bluegrass album
of the year at the 2003 VIBE awards.
Her second album, Let Go, won
the 2005 Covenant Award for
country album of the year.
It was also nominated for
inspirational song of the year and
country bluegrass song of the
year.
Reuy has a brother and a sister in
the Mississauga and Brampton area,
so will have a ready-made support
system when she arrives.
Nonkes said that the congregation
began the application process close
to two years ago. He expects that it
will take at least that long before
Reuy is able to emigrate to Canada.

you from participating. Fishing
poles and tackle are available at the
park on a first-come first-serve basis.
This equipment has been provided
Nonkes said that the church began
sponsoring refugees with the
Vietnamese boat-people.
"We are showing God's love to
others," Nonkes explained.
He pointed out that this is just one
of many international efforts in
which the congregation is involved.
It raised for the south-east Asia
through the tackle share program
that is supported by the Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources and
the Ontario Federation of Anglers
anti Hunters.
The Family Fishing Derby is part

Youth hurt
in ATV
mishap
On June 30 at approximately 9:30
p.m. Huron OPP responded to a
single motor vehicle collision
involving an ATV on Cranbrook
Road, Municipality of Huron East.
A 15-year-old was travelling
along the road on a 2004 Suzuki
ATV. The ATV collided with a dog
and the youth was transported to the
Listowel hospital and treated for
minor injuries.
"Sightings of off-road vehicles
are becoming more commonplace
on our highways," said Const. Jeff
Walraven. The public is reminded
that only certain four-wheeled ATVs
are permitted along the shoulder of
a public highway and persons
operating such motor vehicles under
these circumstances are not to be
under the age of 16 and must hold a
valid driver's licence to do so (at
least G2 or M2). In addition, the
vehicle must be plated, in other
words properly registered, and also
insured for liability coverage.
"At no time are three-wheeled
ATVs or ATVs equipped with a
passenger seat permitted. The
carrying of passengers is against the
regulations.
