Stratford's 'South Pacific' takes you away
An enchanted evening
Theodore Baerg as Emile de Becque and Cynthia Dale as Ensign Nellie Forbush appear in
Stratford's Avon Theatre production of South Pacific. (David Hou photo)

You can almost feel the balmy_
breezes in Stratford's Avon Theatre
production of Rodgers and
Hammerstein's South Pacific.
Visually stunning, thanks to a
realistic set design by Douglas
Paraschuk, the play, like a holiday
may not always be everything you'd
hoped for, but it's still a nice way to
pass the time.
South Pacific had its first
production on Broadway April 7,
1949. Directed by Joshua Logan,
who won a Tony award, and also
shared the Pulitzer as co-author, the
cast included Mary Martin and Exio
Pinza.
Martin played the role of navy
nurse Nellie Forbush, an Arkansas
native stationed on an island in the
South Pacific. She falls in love with
French plantation owner Emile de
Becque but breaks up with him after
discovering he is the father of two
children from a relationship with a
now deceased Polynesian woman.

A second love story revolves
around Marine Lieutenant Joseph
Cable and Liat, the daughter of local
trader Bloody Mary. He too allows
his prejudices to stand in the way of
his true feelings.
The stories are resolved, in very
different ways, after Cable and de
Becque go on a dangerous mission
behind enemy lines.
In the Avon production, directed
by Michael Lichtefeld, it's easy to
forget there's a war going on in the
first act, as the focus in on life on the
island and on the emerging romantic
relationships. However, .by the
second act, the frailty of life and the
cost of war becomes all too evident.
Lichtefeld steers a solid cast over
these south seas. Cynthia Dale as
Nellie proves yet again she loves to
sing and dance, and she's darn good

at it. Theodore Baerg, a professor of
voice and opera at the. University of
Western Ontario delivers in a big
way. Not a sound could be heard
from the audience when his lush
baritone proclaimed This Nearly Was
Mine. Well, perhaps a sigh or too.
Bruce Dow as the goofball with a
heart, Luther Billis, is flawless as
always. Grace Chan entertains as
Bloody Mary, while Nicolette
Liwanag does well as the gentle
Liat.
Lai rd M acKi ntosh lacks the
commanding presence or charisma
one expects from a romantic lead,
but his strong tenor voice
compensates.
The music is, of course, some of
the best, with a large number of
familiar tunes such as Younger Than

Enchanted Evening. These are
suitably enhanced by Lithtefeld's
lively choreography.
Costume designer David Boechler
makes even army fatigues flattering,
but it is the beauty of the Polynesian
clothing that adds romance to his
work.
And backing it all is the simple,
yet wonderfully effective design of
Paraschuk. From elegant plantation,
to sandy beach or communal shower,
his backdrop sets a perfect stage and
makes it all look easy. You can hear
the waves (literally sometimes) and
feel the warmth.
South Pacific is indeed a nice way
to pass the time. And theatrgoers
have the opportunitylto do so until it
ends its run at Avon Oct. 28.
