THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2006. PAGE 15.
From the Minister's Study
Pastor talks of living
life in an empty nest
By Rev. Dave Wood
Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church
It is getting closer and everyone
said it would happen but you don't
really believe it until it does!
No, this has nothing to do with
Fran this time but with the reality
that we are soon to be empty nesters
for a season. It seems that Rose
has opted to live in London, England
for a time, Amanda in London,
Ontario and Zach is heading to
Papua, New Guinea for the sum-
mer.
Now I am not sure if I am
supposed to be sad or happy that the
house will be empty. I know that I
will miss them but there is some
consolation in knowing that the
chips I have hidden and the leftovers
I have been thinking'about will still
be there when I look for them.
Not to mention the empty
milk jug, the dirty dishes and
the chauffeur service that has
been part and parcel of life for
so many years that I might have
to start driving Bart around just
to ease into my new freedom
slowly.
But to tell you the truth, it did
happen quickly. One minute it seems
they were in diapers, going to
school, learning to drive and the
next, they are "out there" on their
own, all grown up and ready to make
a life for themselves.
The older people were right, time
flies the older you get and for Fran,
it must be zooming by like a
Concorde! And yet with this passing
of time, with empty nests and
transitions in life, there is pause for
reflection and of course
thanksgiving.
The writer of Ecclesiastes notes
"There is a time for everything and a
season for every activity under
- heaven." He goes on to point out a
list (the Bryds didn't come up with it
on their own) for the events of life
that are familiar to us all.
A great list, one that is part of each
and everyone of us but as he comes
to the end he concludes, "Now all
has been heard; here is the
conclusion of the matter: Fear God
and keep His commandments, for
this is the whole duty of man."
Life is busy with the raising
of children, making a living, just
trying to keep up and in the process
we can lose sight of what really
matters.
That which we invest our life is
what truly matters and as we go
through these transitions we can
learn that there is a time for
everything but the bottom line, is
relationship with God which is made
possible through Christ.
