Letter to the editor BiG clarifies issue of Campvention tattoo THE EDITOR, The article in The Citizen titled "North Huron says no to BiG" dated Thursday, June 22, requires some clarification to the citizens of Blyth and apparently to the council of the Twp. of North Huron. A request was sent to council on June 15 to "respectfully request" the township's assistance to contribute funds toward the cost of the upcoming pipe band tattoo scheduled for the `Blyth Day' on July 9, during Campvention. Council voted to refuse the request. The fact that North Huron refused the request is not the major disappointment; the lack of facts council appears to have, is. Representatives of BiG have been attending Campvention meetings since December 2005. At these meetings, service, church, youth and idea groups (such as BiG) were in attendance and many different ideas were proposed for the attendees of Campvention. One was a pipe band tattoo, which BiG offered to arrange and three Continued from page 2 and provided a very thought- inspiring homily for the crowd of near 40. The Brussels Pipe Band led the parade with the Comrades of Brussels Legion 218 parading behind. Sergeant-at-Arms Lisa Glanville and colour party Catrina Josling and Deb Cann carried the flags for the service. An impromptu potluck fish fry proposed ideas for funding were mentioned in the presence of the reeve, clerk and other township representatives at the Campvention planning meeting. The three proposed fundraising ideas included, asking North Huron for funds, seeking sponsorships and perhaps collecting a "silver collection" at the event, All proposed ideas had to be taken to the Campvention committee and North Huron representatives were to report back to the next planning meeting which activities that Campvention wanted to see at their event in July. BiG was informed that Campvention was interested in the promise of a pipe band tattoo among many other proposed activities of other groups. Therefore, BiG was given the 'go ahead' to start the process for arranging for the tattoo. It was the council representatives' ;ob to keep the other councillors informed of the happenings at those meetings. Therefore, unless there was a lack of communication between the township reps at the Campvention was held Sunday afternoon at the Branch following the social time after cemetery decoration service. There were over 40 present to enjoy the variety of salads and fish outside on the back lawn for a lovely afternoon. Our condolences are extended to Sandra Geisbrecht and Dale Sauve and families on the passing of Leo Geisbrecht. meetings, council should have been aware of the happenings. The suggestion that BiG had made the decision to have the tattoo before council knew of it and "then asked if it was okay" is offensive. As previously stated, no arrangements for the tattoo were made until BiG received the 'go ahead' at the Campvention planning meetings. At no time did any of the township representatives ask BiG the cost of the tattoo or did they direct us to submit a •budget to council. As soon as estimate costs and availability of pipe bands were secured, BiG submitted their request to council. It is disheartening, to say the least, that council has reacted in this manner to a request for financial assistance. A simple 'no' to the request would have been sufficient. Council should be happy that there are still motivated individuals in our communities that are willing to commit their time and talents to organize events, which will keep outsiders visiting. The day council has no one asking for assistance will Players share the wealth at euchre party The Ethel euchre was held on Monday, June 19. Winners were: share-the-wealth, Ross Stephenson, Harold McNaughton; high, Myrna Burnett, Eileen Mann; low, Bill Craig, Isabelle Craig, Isabelle Bremner; lone hands, Edna McLellan, Viola Adams, Shirley Verstoep, Frieda D'Arcy, Leota Thompson, Florence Holmes; tally, Leona McDonald, Helen Cullen, Frank McKenzie, Marguerite Beirnes, Ross Stephenson, Marlene Johnston. The next euchre is the 150th anniversary on July 3 at 8 p.m. with Beth Earl catering the lunch. be the day our communities no longer have anything to offer. During council's discussions regarding the request for the band tattoo funding, Council intimated that BiG had an "outstanding account for signage". Three years ago, BiG initiated the signage project to ;improve the signs in the core area of the village and BiG met its obligation for funding for this project three years ago. Isn't it a little late to be asking questions that should have been addressed three years ago? The pipe band tattoo was initially chosen as an event by BiG to compliment the variety show that will be taking place later on July 9 for Campvention attendees. The general public is invited into the Campvention `grounds' on this day. The Twp. of North Huron/Village of Blyth is providing this variety concert for Campvention.. Another reason for choosing the tattoo was to hopefully rekindle the idea of using the 'old' Blyth soccer field as an amphitheatre setting for future events. With the development - FROM ETHEL of the campground, there will be many opportunities and it will only be a matter of time until more volunteers will hopefully be planning many exciting happenings. BiG may have been "hung out to dry" by the comments which were made at the last council meeting, but the BiG volunteers are still 'dripping' with ideas for their village. What Blyth truly needs areelected officials who care about their community and are willing to 'stand up' for their constituents in front of the media. BiG will move forward with the band tattoo, among other projects and hope that the citizens of Blyth and visitors will come and join us at 3 p.m. on July 9 for some Scottish flair.
