By Carol Burns Citizen staff Layne Coleman is a Canadian actor, director and playwright who has a long association with the Blyth Festival. "I first came to Blyth in '77 or '78," Coleman stated. This was during the period that founding director James Roy was artistic director. In the past 30 years, Coleman has continued to return to Blyth. He observed that Blyth's evolution has been a joy to watch. In 1972, Coleman was one of the founding members of the 25th St. Theatre in Saskatoon. Born in Saskatchewan, raised in the prairies, during his youth his family moved to Briercrest Bible Institute just outside Moose Jaw. Coleman stated that the transition was not easy. Coleman evolved from the conservative Christian environment of Briercrest to the activist experimental milieu that was 25th St. Theatre. The theatre, a creation of the University of Saskatoon's drama students, began producing plays which reflected the experience of living on the prairies. During this period Paul Thompson, then artistic director of Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM), began his connection with 25th St Theatre. In 1975 Coleman made the move from the prairies to Toronto and TPM. His involvement with TPM has taken many forms: actor, assistant artistic director, artistic director, playwright, board member. Throughout his career he has continued in activist experimental theatre, concentrating on Canadian works. In 1998, he was re-appointed TPM's artistic director. In that role, he has been involved in developing the Regent Theatre Group in Prince Edward County as well as teaching at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (OISE). He has been involved with theatre throughout Ontario as an actor, director, writer and mentor of young actors. Coleman has also worked in film as a screenwriter, including his play Blue City Slammers, which was filmed in Blyth. In recognizing Layne Coleman with the 2005 George Luscombe Award, The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts stated: " ....Coleman's passion is new Canadian plays. He has spent three decades developing, directing, writing and performing in them." Coleman has also been awarded the Toronto Arts Council's Rita Davies Award which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated creative cultural leadership in the arts and culture in Toronto." At TPM one season recently, Coleman facilitated the production of plays written by and about Toronto's immigrant peoples. It is from his position as artistic director that the TPM's directors have permitted Coleman to return to Blyth to perform in the Lost Heir and Schoolhouse. Coleman said that he is happy to be coming back to Blyth to work with directors Paul Thompson and Leah Chemick. Like Thompson, Coleman is the master of the art of collective creation in the theatre, a process in which the (according to the outline of the OISE course) "each contributor has a voice and each Layne Coleman: acting this year in Lost Heir, Schoolhouse. voice is valued....The - collective process allows participants a way to explore artistic impulses." Lost Heir, directed by Paul Thompson, is a show he is comfortable doing. Coleman stated that he is looking forward to portraying the story of father and daughter. He is also looking forward to working with Leah Chernick again in Schoolhouse. Coleman concluded the interview stating, "This will be a special summer." When the Blyth Festival began in 1975 no other summer theatre was producing new Canadian plays Back in Blyth Nearly 30 years after first coming to Blyth, Layne Coleman still finds it a special place to make theatre EMBROIDERY, UNIFORMS, WORKWEAR PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS ,Gerber's WORKW EAR LISTOWEL (519) 291-1400 MILVERTON (519) 595-8776 STRATHROY (519) 245-9944 HOW1CK HOMES Ct' 114401 CUSTOM HOME SPECIALISTS I Complete Planning, Design & Construction Services 335-3156 Proudly Serving Huron County for 25 Years WROXETER, Ontario Web site: www.howickhomes.com R-2000 BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28/29, 2006.
