PAGE 8. BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28/29, 2006.
Stepping up to main stage
Clinton actor Sam Sholdice plays a young Stompin'
Tom after years in Young Company
By Carol Burns
Citizen staff
At 19, Sam Sholdice is not a
stranger to the Blyth Festival. He
was in The Outdoor Donnellys for
three seasons, where he had to play
guitar and sing and is a member of
the Blyth Festival Players. Before
he acted, he was an usher at the
theatre.
Sholdice, who plays the youthful
Stompin' Tom Connoors says of the
part, "It's really intimidating. Not
only because it is Stompin' Tom, but
because I am almost playing three
characters during his years from. 12
to 19."
Sholdice says that Stompin' Tom
went through a lot that he wouldn't
want to go through.
"You can't play Tom as a 19-year
old. At 19, he seemed to have the
life experience of a 35 year old. He
had been on his own since he was
Carlene Bremner: Back on
stage again.
By Carol Burns
Citizen staff
At eight Carlene Bremner is
already an experienced actor. Her
eyes sparkle and twinkle as she talks
about her work.
During the 2005 season she played
Estelle in The Thirteenth One, and
during the 2004 season she was a
member of The Outdoor Donnelly's.
Sam Sholdice: Growing into
theatre at Blyth
15. He was far more mature at 19
than I am," Sholdice explained.
"It is rather strange when you see all
the people sitting and watching you,"
Bremner said of acting. "Actually it is
really fun putting on a show for people
and pretending to be a family. I met
lots of people last year. I knew Tatum
and Curtis from The Thirteenth One."
This year Bremner is playing
Stompin' Tom Connor's half sister in
the Ballad of Stompin' Tom.
She said that the part of his life
where he was in the orphanage was
difficult. It is not like her life.
"It is different acting out a real
person's life," Bremner states. "I
wouldn't want anyone to act out my
life unless it's all made up."
When not acting Bremner is a busy
eight-year old. In addition to school,
she enters grade four in the fall, she
plays soccer in the summer and
broomball in the winter.
She also studies step-dancing, ballet
and acrobatics.
"I like learning new steps,, but some
are kind of boring," Bremner says.
Bremner is a young girl with an
active imagination.
"I am sometimes afraid of the dark
because I think something is there, I
think it is scary. Sometimes I don't go
in the (Halloween) Witches Walk
Sholdice says that one of his
favourite parts of acting is that he
can be someone other than himself.
"It is a way to get out everything
that is not Sam that I, like everyone
else, keep hidden inside me."
Although he is excited and
honoured to be playing Stompin'
Tom, and enjoys the opportunity to
. use his voice in the play, Sholdice
says that he is most worried about
the singing.
But acting is worth the stress.
"Every show can be different.
Doing the show and making people
laugh is great. When the audience is
really into the show, it just gives
such a charge," Sholdice explains.
Sholdice says that he is really into
music. His voice sings as he talks
about the experience of composing
and directing a play at Central Huron
Secondary School. "I was chosen to
be the director, and I composed the
music and put it together."
because the pictures in my mind seem
like real life to me. But I think I am
getting braver now," Bremner says.
Like many girls around her age,
Bremner enjoys reading Chapter
books, doing crafts and watching
television.
She has fun colouring with Brinna,
her younger sister, and likes getting to
play with her all by herself and getting
to be the boss when she is in charge of
Brinna.
When she goes to sleep, Bremner
likes it that sometimes Smudgy, one of
the family's three cats, "Comes and
snuggles up on my legs and sleeps
with me."
Bremner's final words about the
play were, "I hope he (Stompin' Tom)
comes to see it. It would be fun to
show him what we are doing."
Sholdice, who has graduated from
high school plans on going to a
music-related program at Fanshaw
College in the fall. He will continue
to give guitar lessons.
Phone 357-2664
He has no plans to give up acting.
"Not being in charge lets me be
more experiential," he explains. "At
Blyth I trust Eric to let me know
what works and what doesn't."
Carlene's the voice of experience at age 8
