PAGE 4. BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28/29, 2006. Behind the scenes — quietly Festival's general manager would rather talk about shows than about herself Jane Gardner: general manager is where she likes to be — behind the scene By Carol Burns Citizen staff Interviewing Blyth Festival general manager Jane Gardner about herself is challenging. It is something Gardner blames on her former career as a publicist. Gardner is always pleasant and full of enthusiasm and information about the Festival. Formerly executive director of Theatre Ontario in Toronto, Gardner said she returned to Blyth because "I missed being part of the creative process." "At Theatre Ontario I worked on health and safety issues, and saw over 50 productions all over Ontario and in Toronto." According to the internet, Gardner was also involved in exploring the needs of mid and small-sized facilities for the performing and visual arts; responsible for the publication of the 2002 Agents' Book which informed potential actors about what to expect in the theatre; and viewed as a recognizable authority on visual arts and theatre. Gardner says that in her first interview with the Blyth Festival 15 years ago, she didn't understand when she was asked if she cooked. She did. Upon her arrival as a publicist, she found that in Blyth people were always being fed. When she returned as general manager in 2004, Gardner found people were still being fed. "Every opening night we provide food for people, during the annual book sale volunteers sell pies, we auction off gourmet dinners. Theatre and food just seem to go together." Gardner concluded. Gardner joined Blyth Festival when The Outdoor Donnellys was being produced. "It was an extraordinary effort created by the actors and Paul (Thompson)," Gardner stated. "Over seven locations, we had 100 people involved. The volunteer component of the show was enormous. It was a baptism by fire." Gardner takes little personal credit for her successes as general manager. "Eric and I as a team together with the board - and with tremendous casts - are making it work." she emphasized. "It is important if one wants to see a production, to buy tickets early. We may sell out, and the days are gone when we will be re-running successful productions the next year," Gardner advised. Gardner says that her job involves • managing people and budgets, supporting the board in its plans, and working 'with building supervisor Janice Henry. "One of the challenges of setting a budget, or of knowing how well we are doing, is that half of our budget comes from box office sales, " stated Gardner. "The earlier people buy their tickets the earlier we know how well the budget is working." Gardner is excited about welcoming 25 members of Japan's Bunkaza Theatre Company to stay in Blyth August 2-4. She is looking for residents who will take two people as guests into their home, providing each with a bed, breakfast and a bag lunch on Thursday. They will be arriving at the airport at 10 p.m. Wednesday night. BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE is created by the staff of The Citizen P.O. Box 429, BLYTH, Ont. What Gardner calls 'the Japan connection' is important to her. It all began with a gentleman Yoshi Hihara who began translating Blyth plays into Japanese.
