Locks for love
Cassie, Ally and Mikayla Henry were raising money for cancer victims at the Blyth Legion
barbecue at noon Saturday. The girls who have been growing their hair for six months as part
of Blyth Public School's Locks for Love campaign have surpassed their goal of raising $500.
Locks for Love participants had their hair shaved on Tuesday. (Carol Burns photo)

BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, June 18, were Enid
MacDonald and Lois van Vliet.
Ushering were Cliff Snell, Joann
MacDonald and Lavern Clark.
Lynda McGregor was guest organist.
Tom Dunbar welcomed everyone
to church on a very warm Father's
Day, in the absence of Rev. Robin
McGauley. The choir sang the
anthem In My Heart There Rings a
Melody. The children's hymn was
The Wise May Bring Their
Learning.
Mr. Dunbar related some of his
stories about fathers. One story was
of the brown pelican who dives for
his food from 20 feet above the
water. As the young birds begin to
learn this task there is an adult bird
flying nearby to make sure the
young bird does it right. If the older
bird sees them not doing the dive
right they will intercept the young
bird so it does not kill itself by
hitting the water the wrong way.
Bodie Craig read the scripture
Proverbs 16: 20-24, the responsive
Psalm and the gospel reading Mark
4: 26-34.
Mr. Dunbar's message to the
adults was A Day for Dads.
Mrs. Dodds of Spokane started the
first Father's Day to honour her
father in 1909. They started the
tradition on the third Sunday in
June. President Lyndon Johnson
declared the third Sunday in June a
national holiday.
By Jodi Jerome
As part of the summer exhibit
about the Wingham Ecological Park,
currently on display at the North
Huron Museum, two guided history
walks will be held June 21 and June
28.
Museum curator, Jodi Jerome, will
make human history come alive on
the June 21 walk that begins at the
picnic pavilion by the Wingham
Splashpad at 7 p.m. While touring the
park circuit that leads from the
pavilion across the Wescast walking
bridge, through what used to be
Lower Town and back over the
Victoria Street bridge to the pavilion,
Jerome will bring to life the stories
and characters of the area.
Fellow walkers will hear about the
early settlement of the river area, the
development of the mills, the floods
that plagued Lower Town, interesting
stories about the early Western
Foundry Company, the Lower Town
boy who grew up to be the secretary
to Louis Riel and more.
On June 28, the guided walk will
begin at the North Huron Museum at
273 Josephine St., Wingham at 7 p.m.
Dr. William Fitzgerald. (aka Dr.
Epilepsy Huron-Perth-Bruce will
be selling glads at the Blyth post
office Aug. 10 and 11, as part of the
Give Light and Dreams (GLAD)
campaign.
Sales will also occur at Zehrs and
Knechtel's Foodland in Listowel on
Aug. 17 and 18.
Additional locations are Zehrs and
Sweets&Memories in Goderich
Aug. 3 and 4; and at Heartland
Credit Union, Moore's Food Market
and the post office in Clinton on
Aug. 16 and 17.
The GLAD campaign was
introduced in 1982 by Beth Parker, a
woman living with epilepsy who
wanted to make colourful gladiolus
the symbol of hope for all
individuals affected by epilepsy.
Parker was a founder of Epilepsy
Hamilton & District, and a colleague
of Epilepsy Ontario and Epilepsy
Canada.
Bones), of the Bruce County Museum
and Cultural Centre, will begin the
walk with a short slide show about
the history of Indian occupation in
this area of southwestern Ontario.
After the slide show, Fitzgerald will
lead walkers on a guided tour of the
Wingham Ecological Park while
discussing possible sites of Indian use
in the era before the pioneers arrived.
Raising awareness of and
understanding, about epilepsy and
fundraising are all part of the
campaign.
About 600 people in Huron
County have epilepsy or seizure
disorders.
All funds raised in the GLAD
campaign remain in the
communities in which they are
raised.
Last year Blyth raised $322 from
raffle tickets, donations, and flower
sales. In addition, 60 bunches of
gladiolus were donated.
Epilepsy-Huron-Perth-Bruce is
hoping to increase the number of
`preorders' sold prior to the
campaign dates.
To pre-order, or for more
information about supporting or
helping with the GLAD campaign,
catl Leanne .Murray at 519-482-
5527.
These two guided tours are
designed to open up the landscape of
the park so that walkers get an
opportunity to see the natural and
historic beauty of the area.
Both walks begin at 7 p.m. and will
last approximately one and a half
hours.
Bring a water bottle and an active
imagination.
