In discussing their 50 years of marriage, the importance of church and family Is interspersed throughout the Bakelaars' conversation. They are proud of what each of their six children has accomplished, but what pleases them most is that they are following their parents'. footsteps with stable marriages. "One of our children has heen married 28 years. one 27 years.- said !Linke "Even our youngest has been married more than 15 years. And our first grandchild is getting married next week (June 17)." Today, Hinke continues to work part-time for Town and County Support Services( Jim has retired from teaching automotive and technical subjects at Wingham and Clinton high schools. The couple still keeps busy. Jim sometimes picks up part-time carpentry work. Often he can he found in his basement workshop creating magical pictures out of pieces of wood in a process called intarsia, or carving birds. Together, they enjoy travelling throughout North America, and back to Holland. Several times a week they work for their son Calviii picking up and delivering cars for him. And always there is family — for a meal, for dinner, or a longer visit — to feed, to support and to pray for. 50 Years and still counting Jim and Hinke Bakelaar take a few minutes out to share the secrets of the longevity of their marriage. (Carol Bums photo) By Carol Burns Citizen staff On June 8, 1956, James and Hinke Bakelaar began their second voyage into the unknown as they consecrated theirmarriage vows. Five years earlier they had each, separately with their families, emigrated from their homes in Holland to Canada, ending up in Blyth. Jim. from southern Holland. arrived in March and Hinke arrived from northern Holland in June. When asked how they thanaged to keep their marriage vibrant for 50 years, despite the difficulties of being immigrants, and learning English, in addition to the normal day-to-day frictions all couples experience, Jim said "The Lord has blessed us throughout our lives, and our marriage survived by keeping promises, keeping commitments, and by communication." "Our marriage is a three-strand cord, the Lord, family and us. It is not just ourselves. I do not know how people can stay together without the Lord." added Hinke. The church has been a constant in the Bakelaars' lives. They met while they attended a young people's group in Clinton. During their early years they were active in a variety of roles in their church. Dining out The seniors' roast beef lunch held at the Brussels Legion on June 6 got rave reviews from attendees.
