When he entered he said to him; "Is not your name William—, and didtrounot go toaohoolin the town of --y'' fie did, and I remember you very well ; your name is Astor," repled the financial magnate. This led to long.telk over old school dupe. The gor :rnor ,invited Astor to dine with him and asked if there was auythingg bo could do for him. Ho said no, ho needed 'neither cash nor credit. Tho governor prone ed him to tnentton what present would bo aocepteble. Attar again declined hia friend's offer. Finally, two days before he nailed, Mr. Astor call ed to bid the governor good - by, and was handed two papers with the quiet remark: "Thoso may bo of asp to you." Ono of the'paper8 was a Canton price current, the other .a handsomely ongrceaod' parchment authorizing the ship that bore it tetrado freely and without moleatation at any of the ports monopolized by the East India company. This wag the origin of John Jacob Aator'a aplended commercial traaaactiona with China, which he continu- ed with immense profit for seventeen years. His first ship nailed for the East in the year 1800 and his share of the profits amounted to $55,000. On the outward voyage the ship touched at the Sandwich Iolanda to take in water, fire -wood and fresh provisions. When the veaeel arrived at Canton a mandarin came on board and noticing the firewood asked the price of it. The captain Ianghed at the question, bat the mandarin said he wanted to buy it, and offered $500 a ton for it. He bought all the " fire -wood " at that price. It was sandalwood. For nearly twenty years Aator enjoyed the monopoly of the lucrative sandalwood trade. As the Chinese trade developed enter- prise increased. His vessels were sent to Oregon to purchase fors, which were ob- tained in great abundance and at low prices ; thence they were taken to Canton and sold at great profit, and the money invested in teas which were brought back to New York, where his money was again doubled. Astor made by the spiculations four times as much as the regular tea merchant in the moat prosperous days of the trade. The grandest commercial enterprise ever under- taken by an American was Astoi s attempt to establish the tradingpost of Astoria on the Pacific ooaet. It failed, hat not from any want of foresight on the part of its founders, but because the war of 1812 pre- vented the government frons sending an armed vessel to protect the infant.settle- ment. "Bat for that war," Mr. Astor used to say, " I would have been the riahost n an that ever lived."—[New York World. Paper Bottles.
