FROM BRUSSELS
After more than two decades JR's
Gas Bar and Take-out is under new
ownership. Bob and Colleen have
passed the torch to Shahzed Ahmed
and his family. Ahmed has come to
Brussels as an entrepreneur to own
and manage JR's under the new
name of JR's Gas Bar and Family
Restaurant.
Ahmed is an Asian Canadian who
has lived abroad most of his life. He
has owned and operated a family
restaurant in Brussels, Belgium and
brings that expertise to his new
business. He and his wife Zahra and
their two boys Sufyan, 10, and
We're back. Home looks pretty
fine despite the weeds.
To celebrate the last of the income
tax season, we headed to Edmonton
to check on brother Clif, Anne and
crew. A good time of course and a
good catch up on life in general.
The mid-section of Vancouver
Island was our next sleepover.
Flying into Comox and staying on
Mt. Washington was pretty nice.
Hatim, six, are excited to come to the
Brussels community and be a part of
it. As a family they are looking for
continuous support from the town of
Brussels and also the present
employees of JR's.
"We will endeavour to serve the
community of Brussels in an
efficient and effective manner." said
Ahmed.
Although his initial intentions are
that things will be "Business as
usual", long term he plans to
implement new and innovative
concepts to put his signature on
JR's.
Mountains and water are pretty hard
to beat for holiday background.
Being good tourists we checked out
the west side of the island hut
decided it was too cold to try surfing.
I didn't realize we had surfing
available in Canada.
The rain forest effect on that part
of British Columbia makes for very
lush growth and the water
inhabitants are an education.
Ucluelet and Tofino are very nice
places to see. Another day we went
on a catamaran and sea lions, eagles
and seals were in their element and a
joy to watch. Fish farms are part of
the scenery in the shelter of the small
islands.
Another day, driving back from
Port McNeil on the northern part of
the island, a young black bear let us
watch• as she 'blissfully enjoyed her
lunch of several types of grass. My
salad eating has been forever
influenced as I think about her
casually munching her many greens
with no concern for us at all.
We checked in on Harold Steffler's
daughter in Campbell River and
found wonderful wood carvings as
part of their walking paths. The town
holds a contest every summer and
the winners complete with plaque
with name and date become part of
the town scenery.
So over the years many subjects
have been covered. My favourites
were Father of the Sea from 1998
and Butterfly from 2002, but the
others were all well done and a joy
to study.
Another good holiday and another
beautiful part of Canada. •
London Conference of the rimed
Church of Canada met in M nehell
last weekend — a time to rex ice s ort.
done and offer challenges for the
future.
Maud Barlow, a name familiar to
anyone interested in water safety and
quality and health issues spoke to us.
Maud is an activist with an excellent
reputation for knowing her facts. It's
very scary when facts and figures are
thrown at -you that Start with the
undfr-developed world and
suddenly it's about our water supply.
Yes our water has a very time-
limited future unless we get our
governments to act now.
Water is one of the things we share
with the whole world and water as a
human right is the issue. There is
only one source of water and the
entire world shares it. When we
allow pollution to continue we need
to realize that eventually we will be
offered polluted water because that
is all there is.
Maud challenged us to learn about
the activity of large Canadian
companies in less affluent places and
to make our voices heard that
everyone should have the right to
good, clean water. We live in one
world and every day it seems to get
smaller.
